Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
I'm going to be meeting an old friend who is visiting and wants to go out to eat and meet my 2 year old at the same time. We need to be within walking distance of Van Ness metro. Any recommendations? I am most concerned about making sure I don't take my toddler to a place where it would be completely frowned on! We can eat any kind of food. thanks!
Frankly there's not much there. The first thing that popped into my mind was Potbelly... that's how slim the pickings are there.
Italian Pizza Kitchen is really good. We go there all the time with our kids.
There's Acacia Bistro & Wine Bar - http://www.acaciabistro.com/ - which I think has very good food. (it is a wine bar, but they're actually pretty kid friendly.) There's also Italian Pizza Kitchen - http://www.theitalianpizzakitchen.net/ - which is pretty hole-in-the-wall as far as space is concerned, but they're extremely kid friendly and I really like their pizzas, calzones & sandwiches. There's also a slightly more upscale italian place - Tesoro - which I've never tried, but it looks nice.
The best choice probably would be Italian Pizza Kitchen, walk north about 3 blocks. I wouldn't call it hole-in-the wall, it always seems bright and clean when we are there. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. The next level up is Tesoro, which is nice Italian food and good pizzas, that has regular table service and it is pretty kid friendly. Acacia is definitely more upscale but they love our toddler. However, she is usually the only kid there and I am very self-conscious about it. There is a chinese place (Chairlie Chiangs?) right next to the metro, I went once and thought it was awful and never went back.
Another vote for Italian Pizza Kitchen. Skip the cheese, but the margherita and roma are good. Simple but clean and definitely kid-friendly.
Indian Ocean also has very good food and is right around Van Ness. We get the food delivered, so I don't know how it is for kids, but most Asian restaurants are pretty kid-receptive.
Comet pizza is fun and the food is good.
I don't think Comet Ping-Pong is close walkability-wise to there...Pete's Apizza is on Fessenden and would be closer.
Both are not what most people would consider to be "close" to Van Ness metro. |
Please, for the love of all that is good: do not bring your 2 year olds to wine bars because you imagine them to be "kid friendly."
NP here. Have you ever been to the restaurant in question, or are you just throwing bombs? Because we have also taken our kids to acacia bistro, and there were other kids there. And we were made to feel quite welcome by the staff. |
