Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
Coming back to DC on business and need somewhere to take my mom out to dinner. Nothing too adventurous for her but good, and fun, not stuffy atmosphere. She is intimidated by "too fancy" and I want her to have a good time. Will be staying at the Mayflower. Help please!
What about Casa Nonna? J
oops... meant to write just five minutes away from the hotel (walking).
How about the Tabard Inn?
McCormick & Shmicks?
Thanks, Cafe Nonna is new since I was in DC and looks interesting. The Tabard would be good, is the food still good there?
Casa Nonna is in the old California Pizza Kitchen space. It kept the wood-burning oven but the restaurant is a nice, white-tablecloth type place now. Although it didn't seem stuffy or anything when I was there - nice Italian food. I think most would enjoy it.
Tabard is wonderful. Food is still great and Huw Griffiths got nominated for a James Beard recently.
Not within a 5 minute walk, but a short cab ride - Ris, in Foggy Bottom. It's the much more casual plave of Ris Lacoste, formerly chef at 1789. Not stuffy at all.
I work right by the Mayflower and eat out all the time for my job. Cafe Soleil is less than a five minute walk, very small and quaint, and has good food (nothing too fancy, but not burgers either). They take reservations on Open Table, too. For a more hopping crowd with a pub-like atmosphere and good food, there's P.J. Clarke's on 16th and K. Equinox is also close by...pricier and a little fancier, but not too fancy, and it's where the Obamas are known to spend a night out every now and then. Have fun!
