Just fed DS peas for the first time and he spent the next 3 hours screaming from horrible gas pain!

At our doctor's suggestion, we have been feeding our now 6 m.o. DS solid foods, starting about 2 weeks ago. Things have been going pretty well until tonight when we tried pureed peas. They gave him almost instantaneous gas that was so bad that he spent the next three hours arching his back, screaming, crying and generally acting like he was in horrendous pain. We burped him, bicycled his legs, gave him Mylicon, etc, but nothing helped. It was truly awful as I have never seen him in pain like this before. He finally fell into an exhausted sleep after we lay him on his tummy for a while.

Peas are a stage 1 food, but they are also legumes, which cause gas, so what's the deal? Has anyone else had this issue? Are there any green veggies that we can feed him that won't cause gas??? I really REALLY don't want a repeat of tonight's experience. That feeling of being utterly unable to help him was the worst.

spinach -- cook it, then puree it in a food processor or your blender.

I'm sorry about your baby, OP, I'm sure that was difficult for you both.

for the future, keep the peanut allergy way in the back of your mind. pea :: gas :: mild allergic reaction? :: common allergen :: peanut

Sounds too soon. What did he have for lunch?

Other than the peas, he had only had breast milk today.

My son did great with peas at first, but then started projectile vomiting right after eating them. Turns out he has a pea allergy... Definitely talk to your pediatrician about seeing an allergist. And, avocado and spinach and maybe green beans are worth trying. Sorry about your son's reaction; I know how scary and upsetting it is!

Zucchini is super mild.

OP sorry but gas down there is not instantaneous. It might be something in your milk or just his body getting used to the solids in general.

allergic reactions usually happen later on. allergies in first time exposure are super rare.

Really? That wasn't our experience with our DD's egg and nut allergy. One touch and her body freaked.

I was going to suggest this, it is a huge hit in our house. Also, if you want to do something like cucumber, it doesn't have much nutritional value but it is mild and purees nicely.

yup. if you know how allergic reactions happen you'll understand why they usually happen on second exposure.
