Pullups and Potty Training, Almost 3 Year Old

Anonymous
Our DS is 33 months old and has been using the toilet for several months now (#1/standing & sitting and #2 always sitting *grin*), accident free. He is still wearing a pull-up for nap (3 hours, almost always dry when he wakes) and nights (9-10 Hours 30/70 dry/wet in the a.m.). He is still in his crib and shows no sign of wanting a toddler/twin bed. My question for you experienced moms (I am a new mom, first child), is should I be taking the diaper off for naps and/or nights now or wait until he can go to the bathroom on his own? No real rush, I just want to do the right thing by him, that is giving him control if he needs it or allowing him to pee (never goes #2 in his diaper) until he can visit the bathroom on his own. Your thoughts are so very much appreciated.

This is a good age to switch him to a twin bed (with side bumpers), though this doesn't mean you have to do it now. Putting him in a twin bed would allow him to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, BUT he probably will just sleep through it considering his age and stage in potty training. He's still young, and if he's getting up in the mornings wet, it's best to keep his pull-ups on for now. When you notice him staying dry until morning on a very regular basis, then it might be about time to switch to a rubber mat instead. For naptimes, you could leave him in his underwear, though that depends on whether or not he wakes up dry most of the time. You could make sure he pees right before his nap, then put him down. I would say by around age 4 or 5, most kids are much better able to wake themselves up at night if they need to go to the bathroom. Bedwetting runs in my family though, so for my kids it was more like 8 or 9!
