My first two kids never got the hang of trikes, but are great on bikes, so yes, that happens. My third is coordinated on both. As far as starter bikes, it depends on your budget. What we did was buy cheap ones with training wheels at Toys 'R Us. If your child doesn't like it, you aren't out a lot of money. And they grow so much early on that you'll get two years at most out of a bike. The big thing is to get the right size so it's managable. Have your child stand over the bike and there should be about an inch or so between crotch and bar. Then adjust the seat so that when your child is pedaling, his/her leg will go out almost fully extended - not quite full, but almost.
