Haven't seen any comments about CCE (grades 3-6). Anyone have kids there? Also, re: RH, have read that it's huge, but are kids happy there? (they seem to be from posts) Thanks for your comments. |
I think those are extremely good schools and kids seem to like both a lot. |
We have friends with a son in K at RH. They complain about the little time allowed for outdoor play and the limited opportunity for music, gym and science. |
I hate to say it, but welcome to MCPS. |
Agree. MCPS is doing a lot that's right, but you have to accept this as part of the deal if your kids are going to ES in the county. |
I agree, but within those constraints I think these schools do as well as any. For example, CCES and NCES have a fabulous music teacher who will give lessons in the instrument of choice to all students, and the RHPS PTA funds artists to come in and work the kids. I also think standardized testing for science is coming down the road, so I expect MoCo will start to emphasize that more. |
Agree. And this means even -less- art, music and physical movement time in either PE or recess. |
That may be, but as far as public school options go, these are great options, and if you have the money to go to private school then you certainly have the money to send your kid to afterschool activities and camps when school is closed which focus on art, music, and/or physical activity. |
Recess at RH is a half-hour every day. My kid would prefer 2 hours, but I don't see 1/2 hour as obscenely short. They also have great active afterschool programs (fee-based, like most other MCPS schools) for all kids, and RH just introduced a once-a-week AM exercise program before school starts. RH has music, gym, art and other "specials" once each week - again not amazing but pretty consistent with my childhood and I don't see any of this as a deficiency of the public school system. We don't see any obsession with worksheets or testing; teachers are great and parents are super involved. We're in the NCC catchment, and see kids and parents every day from that school - everyone seems very happy there and I hear only good things about CCES as well. |
