Travel Insurance

Have you ever purchased travel insurance? Not sure if that is what we need, but we are planning a week's vacation to Puerto Rico in July (house, car and airfare) and DH's mother is terminally ill. We thought if, tragically, we needed to cut our vacation short, or cancel it all together in the event we needed to be home for a funeral, travel insurance would cover our nonrefundable expenses. Anyone with experience with travel insurance or making a similar claim on a travel policy? Any recommendations for brokers? (I plan to cross post this on the off topic board, as well). Thanks.

I was considering it once and I found Steve at tripinsurancestore.com to be really helpful in sorting through what would be covered and what wouldn't (this probably sounds like a paid ad but it's not, although I ended up deciding that between the cost of the insurance and the risk that they would call it a preexisting condition and refuse to pay unless we bought the "any reason" policy, not to buy anything).

A lot of people recommend shopping at insuremytrip.com too.

We travel overseas a fair amount (I'm an immigrant & my family live overseas). I usually shop at insuremytrip.com.

Cancellation insurance is the most expensive part of travel insurance, unfortunately. Before you look at buying insurance, you should also check your credit card perks; some credit cards have built in travel insurance when you purchase the trip on the card (same with auto rental).
