I have received today a Parent Survey of Child Strenghts for Grade 2 Global Screening. They are asking us to check 12 boxes regarding 4 areas (creativity, leadership and social skills, motivation, learning). An additional page could be attached for a detailed description.
Do they give a lot of consideration to this? Or it is really the test scores & teacher recommendations that matter? Thanks! |
It definitely counts in the placement process and could be the factor that gets your child identified. If you think your child is gifted, give high marks!!! |
Teacher here: OMG, yes it counts!!! So many parents didn't return them and it was sooo frustrating. We'd have a kid that met almost all other criteria, but we'd need one more piece of data to label them as GT and the parent questionnaire would have counted had they sent it in(and given high marks)... We'd end up having to retest the kid the following year to see if they met the criteria if we truly felt they were gifted. |
That seems really silly. Do any parents send it back with low marks?? Would a child lose gifted status if they did? |
Is there any purpose in filling that out if you are planning to move the following year, so your child wouldn't be in MCPS for third grade? |

There was one really odd question-- like "does your child lead other children in good or evil ways" (answer: a lot/sometimes/never) |
This really concerns me and the issue should be reexamined. I would bet that a good number of non-responders may be red zone parents who really don't know the importance of this questionnaire or are so busy juggling work and home demands that it slipped by. Wouldn't it be easier and a heck of a lot cheaper to follow up with the parents of the children who are "on the fence" for the label and explain to them the importance of their input. It seems ridiculous to just shrug your shoulders and pay for an expensive test again the following year instead of giving the parents another chance to fill out the form. What is worse is possibly miss identifying a child who could really benefit from the services. |
