Hello,
My OKPs are generally positive for 2.5 days...so is ovulation 12-36 hours after the END of the peak or after the BEGINNING of the peak? I haven't been doing temperatures, just OPKs. Thanks in advance. |

I think it's at the beginning of the surge--the first time the test line is darker than the control line. The other positives are just the rest the LH leaving the body. LH releases over a 24-48 hour period. As I understand it, the LH is released into your blood and it takes a while for the body to flush that out through urine. An LH surge lasts 48 hours.
The conversion from a negative to a positive reading would suggest that ovulation is about to occur within 24–48 hours, giving us 2 days to BD. So, I think common practice is to find out when you ovulate each month. Then, plan to BD the two days before and the two days after the surge. Make sure you stay regularly hydrated...meaning don't drink a ton of water one day and not the next. This will throw your results off. Also, test at the same time everyday. Its basically a science experiment so try to keep the variables consistent. I hope that helps. We're in the same boat! I got pregnant in August (but miscarried) using this technique.

I think it is from the beginning of the surge - and it's probably closer to the 36 to 48 hour mark from then - I have noticed that I ovulate 48 hours from my first detectable surge, but I use those cheapy internet things, so I test 2x a day - if I waited until 2pm like they tell everyone to, I'd probably ovulate 24-36 hours after that. . .
I ovulate within 12 hours of the surge, maybe less. Other women ovulate a full two days later. It is so individual. I really recommend having a monitored cycle, with bloodwork and sonograms, to pinpoint when you are ovulating in relation to the OPK. Considering an egg is viable for 24 hours at the most, it's worth the money.
This is why the instructions tell you once you get a definite positive (line equal or darker than control) you are surging and to STOP TESTING. Any test after that is irrelevant and I don't know why people insist on doing it.
OP here... I read that you can get mini surges before the actual ovulation if you are stressed (which I always am)...and I've been TTC for awhile and this is the first month I tested for multiple days. It made me wonder if we were stopping too early on previous months, which is why I posed the question.
