| I've heard varying amounts on this....just curious what the consensus here might be. Thanks. |
| $200 |
| $100 |
| It would never occur to me to give cash to someone who baptizes my baby. |
| We gave $200 to the church as the priest did a special ceremony for friends and family on a saturday (instead of a regular church service) |
We did the same for a baptism on an off-day. I would give the church (not the individual) $100 as an offering for a regular-day baptism. |
| We donated $300 to the church. |
| How did you donate it to the church - in your regular Sunday envelope? Did you give the priest an envelope the day of the baptism with a check? Did you give it to the parish office? Thanks, |
| I say both, give the church a 200.00 donation and give the priest a separate check or cash 100.00 chances are he will donate it to a charity so cash might be a a better option for him. |
| Really? It never occurred to me to tip the priest! DD was baptized during the course of a regular Mass. We gave a larger than normal check that day in our regular offertory envelope in honor of the event. Now I feel badly, but I'd never heard of such a thing. |

We are Catholic and have had our children baptised at 2 different DC parishes.
1 was clear that a required donation was expected. The other made no mention of it. For the 1 that made no mention of it, we purchased a brick for each of your children who were baptised there. For the 1 that expected it, we made a $50 donation to the church and a $50 donation to the deacon who performed the service. I was really turned off with an expected donation as I would have done it without being asked and it is one of the reasons we are no longer parishioners. |
| Another Catholic who didn't think to make a donation when our babies were baptized. They all happened during the regular Sunday morning Mass. Geez, our time and tithe should be enough. |
| OP, do you even normally attend services at the church where you're having your child baptized? Out of decency, some sort of nominal donation to the church would probably be appreciated by the priest/pastor as you're a nonmember. |
I agree. Why are you tipping a prinst to do his job? |

OP here...we are regular contributing parishoners, weekly. This is our third child....it never occured to me to give anything for #1, then I heard about it and gave the priest a thank you note with $50 in it for #2, then heard some friends talking about $100 or $200....so I thought maybe $50 seemed cheap. We are getting ready to do #3 so I was curious about what others did.
