Ok, not tupperware, but an assortment of glad, ziplock, rubbermaid etc storage containers. I swear, someone is gaslighting me by removing either the container OR the lid from each pair.
So, what should I consider when buying new? I don't think glass containers would be practical, since I throw my lunch in my briefcase and I strongly object to extra weight. Anyone have a favorite variety of food containers? I mostly need single serving sizes; don't do a lot of casseroles and whatnot. |
| I love our snapware. We have a small kitchen and the containers nest together. They are square and stack well too. |
I just bought some Tupperware and I was amazed at what is available. It is also guaranteed for ever and if you heat up spaghetti or anything with tomatoes, sides don't turn red. I've been using it for a couple of weeks and I'm going to another party and order some more. |
| I love my glass snapware, but I saw some plastic snapware at Costco this weekend. You might try either the Glad or Ziploc disposables that have lids that lock together (I forget which one). Container Store would have lots of options, too. |
| I bought Rubbermaid containers with lids that snap together and you can snap the container on top of the lid. It makes organization very easy. I got a whole box of various sizes for about $20 at Sam's Club a few years ago. |
| I second the Rubbermaid. I got mine at Target and just bought the pieces I needed a la carte. They have lids that fit 2 or 3 different size bowls and bowls all nest together and the lids all nest together. They are also BPA free now. |
| People do not microwave food in plastic! Are you waiting for your hormones to go haywire before you learn? Ok, PSA over. |
| We recently moved and in the process I threw out the motley -- and extensive -- assortment of containers that had taken over one entire cabinet. Discovered in the process that we don't need a third as many as we used to have. Maybe just get a few disposable sizes and go from there? |

If you know what you pack, it might be worth a trip to the container store to get the size of what you really need. They have all sorts of types - and you could test out the weight. A few claimed to be BPA free. I find once I focused on buying just a few in the size I needed, I was more careful with them and didn't lose the lid as often.
I have both glass lock and plastic lock and love for the well-fitted lid, but the snaps can take up a a little extra room, so if size is an issue as well as weight, it might not be worth it to you (its not that much bigger, just depends on if every centimeter counts). The sandwich size - you wouldn't notice much difference, but if you are packing in smaller type containers, you will notice the extra bulk (size of snaps compared to the actual container). By far my favorite for packing lunch that I microwave is from IKEA (white with red lids, lids have a vent), but I'm not sure they make them anymore. Plastic, but not clear (so I tell myself they are safe). Not too heavy, but durable. |
I suggest you try the 'i can't believe its butter' containers. Perfect for a small roll to take to work. I have been using them for years and one time a CEO of a corporation I was consulting for saw me with one and laughed out loud |
| I got a set of Pyrex recently that is great. Before that, I had purchased snap and go plastic, and they were an improvement over the gladware. But plastic kind of grosses me out, so I try to stick to the Pyrex. I will need to buy a bit more though to use it exclusively. |
| I have the Gladware containers with the lids that snap together (the lids don't disappear as easily -- it's like a chain gang). They're BPA-free, unbreakable, and dishwasher safe. |
I always have a ceramic bowl at work and transfer things to that for heating. That way you get the convenience/weight of plastic without the dangers of microwaving it. |
Very good idea. |
