| What is your agency doing to prepare for the impending furlough? |
|
Please name the agency, or at least post a clue.
I am a fed and haven't heard a thing. |
| nothing so far. I've been told that we should assume we wont be getting back pay either so figure out how to cover bills. oh and my boss told me to gather whatever materials I need for the projects I'm working on because the doors will be locked for non essential employees--but of course I should be getting work done at home. |
| You are not required to work at home. Check OPM's website for info on that. |
I would be very careful about working from home without explicit written instructions from your boss. There are important legal considerations to be aware of here. |
Absolutely agree. I'd ask the boss to put the request in writing so you have a paper/email trail. |

Technically all agencies are required to send these out 30 days before any possibly furlough. If your agency is one of the ones slated for a big budget cut they are doing the right thing.
The powers that be say that Mrch 7 is D-Day. |
| Whatever the agency is, they are not following WH guidance... they told us nothing in writing yet. |
| We have been told that some of us will be considered essential personnel. There is disagreement over what that means for pay though. Some say that essential personnel will get paid as usual. Others say essential personnel are only guaranteed to be paid when the governemtn re-opens, while non-essential personnel may or may not get paid. Anyone with better information? |
| Why would you work at all if there's no guarantee you're getting paid? Also, if you want to show people what a government shutdown looks like, then shut down; don't keep doing work. |
| I can't see the shutdown happening -- it's too risky for the Republicans. It will damage the economic recovery. Remember Gingrich. |
wanna bet? |
| high unemployment is good for the party who is out |
Because despite the (in my opinion) old and wrong stereotype that government workers are lazy, don't do anything, and clock in at 9 and leave at 5, I have a demanding job. I know they exist and perhaps at my agency we could say this about support staff (but not always), but I personally don't know of many people who clock in and out and don't work more than the standard. I'm a lawyer with a lot of responsibility and paid or not, if the government "shuts down", my responsibilities don't end. |

The question of working while furloughed brings up any interesting question for litigating attorneys, or really anyone with external deadlines.
If I have a filing deadline or a trial, I can assume that I will not expect to meet it if it occurs during the furlough. but I do not feel comfortable assuming that the date will be extended if it is set for after the furlough ends. For example, if I have a trial in ten days, and I am furloughed for the first five, I just lost five days of prep that I won't get back, right? That is why I would want to work while the government shuts down. |
