Looking for a recommendation for a financial planner for a mid 30s couple with 3 small kids

I am looking for someone to actively manage our portfolio. We have about $500K in Roth IRAs and another $500K in a brokerage account. We max out our retirement plans anually and put an additional $5K into a brokerage account monthly. We have a few million additional in business interests we own. Tax strategies and potential estate tax issues are a possibility by the time we reach retirement age (I want to make sure we plan now).

I am particularly interested in (but not sure I can find) someone knowledge about LGBT couples.

Try Capital Financial Partners on West Gude in Rockville-they are great and I know they work with a few LGBT couples (friends of ours). 301-718-0030

Capital Financial Partners is not registered with FINRA. A major warning sign. I'm not sure they would be appropriate anyway. Looking for someone a bit more sophisticated. Thanks anyway

I have been working with AFS Financial in Bethesda for the past 5 years. I highly recommend them and have been very pleased with the quality of service. They have really helped me plan for retirement and education expenses.

MD or VA?

I used Jim and felt I got excellent impartial advice, not trying to shill a product.

He has offices in MD and keeps hours one day a week in downtown DC.

OP here. We live in DC.

look for a fee only financial planner that is registered as an RIA. they make money from the fees that you directly pay, not from selling you products

check www.napfa.org, www.garretplanner (something like that).

Steve Thalheimer (might be misspelled) in Silver Spring specializes in your demographic (LGBT, younger families). he would be a very good choice.

Uggh. I hate people like this. You think only people in MD or VA can afford financial planners? Rube.

OP here. I appreciate the suggestions, but we have been very fortunate and have a net worth of several million. I am hoping to find a financial advisors whose average clients look more like us, rather than us being on the higher end of with whom they work.

AFS deals with the demographic you describe and are fee only
