ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Our MLSN club definitely formed teams off of school year at tryouts. Q4 Kids who started all year and played good minutes got bumped to second teams by kids who rode the bench. This happened across several age groups.

Throughout the history of this epic thread, all the way from page 1, there is a pattern, whenever someone posts about somekind of SY development, it will be met with jeers and ridicule, labeling it as trolls/liars/fake news.

But almost inevitably the rumor would become true. I am not saying this one will be so, but just merely stating my observation.

GA announced yesterday the Aspire Conferences for 2024-25, but nothing regarding BY vs SY. Let’s see today.

In all seriousness, I don’t know if GA is going to announce anything today. The commissioner has said that GA will announce at the end of May, which is today, or by their AGM in June. That is a fact. You can email her and ask. She’s forthcoming with their plan on an announcement without giving away what that announcement will be. I’m sure many others have emailed her and asked. With the conferences announced yesterday, it would seem the only big thing left to announce is the GA’s plan for age registration. I’m sure it will be more detailed than what US Club has said and will be a blueprint that ECNL will likely follow depending on the specifics. I don’t believe the guys that say “ECNL has decided, it’s set in stone.” There will be some nuances to the change.

All this shouting about BY/SY is only a distraction from how utterly toxic youth soccer is, especially the constant analysis of who gets an edge and who gets screwed. This passes over the fact all kids are exploited for their talents to make money for others in nothing close to a fair exchange and too many parents are all too complicit in a false chase of winning a scholarship at the end of the rainbow. Changing just rearranges the deck chairs and something else to complain about. Sorry, not sorry, for the rant. Just tired with how sh*tty this entire country is becoming but we shouldn't be surprised given how we incentivize the wrong things and youth soccer is exactly an example of that.

The basis of NIL. But I don’t think all kids play youth sports for scholarships. Anyone who knows anything about college sports, especially soccer, should know scholarships are few and far between with almost no full scholarships being offered (that might change). I agree though that youth sports can become daunting and unsustainable if you allow yourself and family to get carried away in the rat race. It’s good to step back every year and ask your kid if it’s still something they want to pursue. I’ll leave alone the “shitty country” comment to stay on topic with soccer. Enjoy your Friday, and don’t take everything so seriously and to heart.

A large club adopts MLSnext programs. All their U12s and all their lower ranked teams in the high age groups stay NCSL and all go school year. Next question is if the 2nd ranked MLSNext/GA go school year or not. Organization wise, they are gonna have to deal with birth year/school year shuffling somewhere internally. Would MLSNext care what they do with the 2nd team and dictate it? Would the club care when and where they do the shift, i.e. is it easier to just treat the top team and birth year or does it not matter? I have suspicions, think only top team goes BY. But, it's gonna be odd for these kids on the cusp of 1st/2nd team.

I think BY across any current platform is over. Not to say something will pop up in the future as a true national team feeder that is BY only, but MLSN and GA will be going school year along with ECNL.

ODP, granted is a USYS program, is apparently staying BY.

That would then mean the Q4 kids would now playing competitive would be playing against kids that have been playing soccer a year longer than them usually, in school a year longer definitely, in addition to being youngest, which all adds up.

Not that they ever would do it or could survive in our current system, but they should have 6-month teams, especially at younger ages. I think it would enhance development and reduce the effects of RAE. It sort of exists now with how clubs have a/b teams, but that system loses far too many from the b team who lose interest as the perception of support and resources always lie with the A team.

SY should help some with retention, how much is hard to say. But what we need is for kids and more importantly parents to view the B and C teams as an opportunity and a motivator. Soccer development, like most everything in life, is a marathon and a roller coaster; embrace it.

Why are we trotting out the retention canard again?

The data doesn’t support that theory. Retention is cyclical and the issues hurting youth sports retention are found in all sports, including the multitude of sports that were always SY.
Retention is the driving reason for leagues switching back to school year.

True, most people believe the data (and logic) supports this, but a few don't.

Believing is not the same as being correct. Lots of things seem right. This is one that is very clearly not evidenced in the data, but sounds right.

And just because a logical argument can be made, doesn’t mean it is correct. Logic is not categorically true.

Retention? Or ease of recruiting? or trapped players? or BY was not improving YNT as intended?

Retention.

Wut? Just saying some rando who claimed it was SY per “commissioners” to be announced last week, that has turned into one source (bc GA only has one comish) and a constant “to be announced tomorrow” needs to do more than shatpost.

Challenging a posted to provide evidence is hardly jeering or ridicule. Particularly since some of us actually know the claimed source…😳

I wrote the comment at 7:49. It seems to me that MLS cares about BY for top team... but maybe I am wrong?
