Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| I am hearing not so great things about my level IV center - Bull Run. Can anyone share what their experiences are at Bull Run. Also, what are the better local IV centers in FCPS? |
I am guessing you are referring to Local Level IV and not AAP Centers. The best Local Level IV schools are probably the schools with the largest number of AAP Center-eligible kids, but even that measure could be debated. Information on the number of students in Local Level IV schools was posted in the summer of 2009 for the School Board retreat. That data is available here: http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/legacy-content/86789J2271B7/$FILE/AttachmentA.pdf |
| We are zoned for Bull Run (Virginia Run home school). Do you mind sharing what you've heard? |
| I have heard that there was some teacher turnover and that the program is not what it used to be. Not really sure though and trying to dig up more information. |
| Bull Run is our base school and an AAP Center. My oldest went to BRES for K-2 and then full-time AAP in 3rd-4th. My youngest is now in 2nd at BRES and is in the screening pool for full-time AAP Center. BRES has had an extremely high teacher turnover rate every year since the current Principal came. They also have been "dumbing down" the curriculum to try and close the gap so they can make AYP. The new teachers behing hired to replace the stellar/veteran teachers who have fled have not been the cream of the crop. Last year's 3rd grade AAC classes were exceptional and the work was right on target. However, this year there was an influx of additional students, whose parents appealed for their entry into AAP, and so they had to dumb-down the 4th grade AAP and now the well-prepared kids are bored while the teachers try to "catch-up" kids who probably shouldn't be there to begin with. I don't know if that is a trait of BRES more so than a problem with the "sequaky wheel gets the grease" in making kids eligible for the center. The bottom line is at BRES, you have to know which teacher to ask for and send in letters to the Principal requesting the few "good" teachers left who actually teach to/above grade level. |
Bull run is NOT local level IV. Bull Run is a full-time AAP Center. |
| Does anyone know if there is any report from fairfax count board that tells each year how many students are selected in AAP pool and accepted in full time AAP center? |
No one said that Bull Run was Local Level IV, but thanks for the post just the same. |
It is not reported annually. The closest to such a report would be the annual presentation provided by Dr. Peter Noonan (Asst. Superintendent of Instructional Services) before the School Board. It is usually presented in May. |
| thanks for the intel, 12:23. |
I have seen this info. I thought it was provided annually: how many students admitted from each ES; how many elect to go to Center. I have seen this info online -- but it took me a while to find it . . . |
The latest presentation posted on the AAP website is from 2009: http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/pdfs/presentations/School%20Board%20Presentation%202009.pdf |
