Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
| ...a 1st grader who excels academically with some OT/technology supports, but because of 'limitations' gets frustrated and either shuts down in class, or tries to take entire class off topic by verbally interrupting? Public school is not helping, as he needs a small class with a bit more attention. Any privates would be willing to give us a try, you think? |

| Mainstream of special needs? I would suggest the latter even if he does excel with supports because he really will have to get the functioning as part of a classroom down with help. Then he can transition back to a mainstream school. Does he have Aspergers? |
| Absolutely. There are quite a few schools designed for kids who are frustrated with the limitations of the public school classroom. Let us know where you live or where you can commute to and I'm sure people will have some suggestions. He sounds like a neat little guy. |

Don't even think about Catholic schools, they have no patience for any special needs - especially one that is "behavioral".
McLean is not a good fit, same reason. I have to be honest. We had similar issues when my DS was in kindergarten, we were rejected by Lab, McLean and St. Andrews because of the behavior issue. He's not being malicious in any way, but his ADHD and expressive/receptive language issues made it really difficult for him to stay on task. His way of "escaping" was to interrupt the class. So we are in public, on and IEP, on Vyvance and doing heavy tutoring. Good Luck. |

If you could tell us a bit more about his limitations it will help. Does he have a specific diagnosis?

OP here--This sounds very similar to our situation--subtle disruptions likely due to ADHD; What grade are you now? We would do public in a heartbeat (great local public, warm community) but the class sizes would not work! Just a dream, but I wish public schools had a program for kids who required a small learning environment (class size say 20 and under) but otherwise function academically well. |
