My DS loves applesauce and at the farmer's market, I bought a large jar of organic stuff. You know how this story ends, don't you? He took one mouthful and went YUCK. I've tried sneaking it into things, but it makes him dislike the foods he does like!!!
So I think I need to go another route, like use it in baking or something that isn't related to my DS's meals. Any ideas for recipes? |
| Cake! Make mini-loaves and freeze them if you don't want a full cake around. |
| Use in place of oil (1:1 substitution) in any baking recipe. Especially good for muffins and quick breads. |

Not good for you but tasty:
APPLE SAUCE FRITTERS 1 C sifted flour 1 egg 1 tbsp sugar 1/4 C milk 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp melted shortening 1/4 tsp salt 1 C apple sauce Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together. Combine egg, milk, melted shortening and apple sauce and stir into the dry mixture. Drop by spoonfuls into deep fryer heated to 365 degrees. Fry until golden brown (3-5 minutes). Drain on paper toweling. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired, before serving. |
| I always add applesauce to pancake mix - it makes them nice & fluffy! (I make a lot of them on the weekend & the kids reheat in the micro for breakfast during the week) |
| Meant to add that you cannot taste it in the pancakes. I don't think your DS would notice. |
| Melissa D'Arabian used it in cornbread on her show on the Food Network yesterday. |
| I mix applesauce and plain yogurt = delicious. Not bad in cottage cheese either. |
| Applesauce can be substituted for up to half the fat in baking recipes. |
| Try stirring it into oatmeal for breakfast--yum! |

The epicurious.com recipe for triple-layer carrot cake calls for a lot of oil, and commenters recommend subbing applesauce for part of it. If you also cut way down on the sugar, you can produce carrot muffins.
PS Sub some whole-wheat flour for the white. |
