best STRAW cup for 6 month old

Anonymous
Hi- I am just introducing a sippy to my 6 month old and would like to start with the straw kind and skip the traditional sippy all together (have others done that?)....i know it may take him longer to get the hang of it, but that is okay with me.

Can anyone suggest the best straw cup for this age? i don't mind if it isn't spill-proof, if it is easier to get the water out....

i have the nuby, but it seems like you need a strong suction....at least when i try it....and i dont think i can take the valve out of this one....

thanks for the help!

may i ask why you want to skip it?
at this age they don't have the coordination/skills or muscle development to use a straw yet.

we're skipping the sippy but we're going straight to an open cup. while DC still needs help with tipping it over we get the job done. we practice in the shower and DC loves it.

Do people generally start sippy cups at 1?

Try the foogo one by Thermos. The straw is soft and it is stainless. My 9 month old loves hers.

OP has a 6mo old no way they'll know what to do with the cup.

We started around 6 months. Not sure how long it took for him to get it, but not long. We used the Munchkin Mighty Grip Straw cup. The only downside to this cup is that there's no way to cover the straw (like with the "flip n sip" styles). For us, that meant once we started using it regularly, we had to switch. It was no problem for DS, but you have to be careful not to mix up the parts because they look similar but aren't always compatible.

I used the Nuby straw cup with 2 handles on either side with my now 2.5 year-old, but I think I started when he was 8-9 months old? Before then, I let him sip water from a sake cup (like a ceramic shot glass). I held it for him, of course. He never has used traditional sippy.

My second baby was 6 months old yesterday and we're planning on starting solids tomorrow. I'm also going to try to introduce water with a straw cup. We'll see how it goes.

I tried to find the Nuby with two handles for him, but they didn't have it at Taget. The did have a BPA free one from Platex though. It actually looks a little better because you can squeeze it in a certain spot to get the liquid into the straw to help them learn. The negatives, it was almost $6 for one cup. We'll see if it works before I buy more. Oh and the straw is thinner than the Nuby, but I don't know what effect that will have.

Good luck, I get it!

they gag themselves a lot before getting it. by the time they get it it's already around 8/9 mo. waste of money!

also it teaches them to bite to suck, bad bad habit, they'll be biting every single straw! i've seen it A LOT!

wait a little and introduce the regular cup now if you want to skip the sippy. soon enough your child will be ready for the real straw cup.

I have a 7 month old, along with 2 older kids. I don't think a 6 month old will know how to sip from a stray. It is MUCH more likely that your 6 month old will just chew on that straw for the next few months. Eventually, like closer to 12 months, you kid may get the hang of sipping, but you still have a ways to go for that.

We taught ours to drink from a straw by 6 months -- it isn't rocket science. Put a straw in a glass of water, block the top with your finger, place straw in child's mouth, release water. Give them straw cup. Watch them drink.

We too used/use the Foogo ones. They're great.

Why do you want to skip sippy cups?

We also skipped sippies for the most part. It took a couple of months for DS to figue out how to use the straw cup. We would fill a couple with water and leave them on the floor with his toys, so that he could play with them and experiment on his own. Eventually he figured out how to drink from them. I forget what we started with--I think it was munchkin (it was hourglass-shaped and had a soft straw). Look for cups that are easy to hold (the hourglass shape works well) and have a soft. flexible straw. Skipping sippies is totally doable if you want to.

I disagree with your statement. We started with a straw up. Our ped told us it's better for a baby's mouth than a traditional sippy, it developes the jaw/mouth muscles.

Both my children were tongue tied, both drank from straws by almost 7 months. It's not that hard to suck liquid up a straw, even for a baby. Any speech therapist will tell you to use a straw cup over a sippy.

We started DD drinking a little water from a straw when we introduced solids at 6 months. At first we just stuck a bendy straw in an open cup and held the cup for her. She caught on pretty quick -- she certainly wasn't gagging or chewing on the straw. After a couple months we went to the hourglass shaped munchkin flip and sip straw cups in preparation for giving up the bottle, which we did right at 12 months.
We let her practice with an open cup, too ( or at least I do-- DH scolded me when she tipped too much water into her mouth and came up coughing. Also when I confessed she was practicing by drinking bath water) She's definitely interested in drinking from an open cup, but she doesn't quite have the coordination to do it and I often don't have the time, like in the mornings, to let her practice and get water everywhere.
