Future Western High School

I think you need to stop pretending much of Great Falls isn’t much closer to Herndon than Langley. Or that it doesn’t border Loudoun County. At some point the scam will end.

I live in GF. We don’t need a new high school. The mythical “western HS” is to alleviate crowding further west.

Further west of Great Falls is a different county with its own school system.

And the new school isn’t a myth according to FCPS’s own capital spending programs.

Isn’t it cute how PP thinks Fairfax ends at Great Falls.

I can read a map and know that. I don't think anyone is disputing that. I also can look at membership data and see that Langley is underenrolled and Chantilly is overenrolled, as is Centreville.

Chantilly is much closer to many of Oakton's students than Oakton. Kids that go to Crossfield and Navy Elementary. Why aren't you complaining about that? Many kids that go to Fairfax live in Centreville's backyard. Why don't they go there? Because Centreville is overcrowded. Chantilly is next closest to them. But, Chantilly is overcrowded. If Great Falls went to Herndon, then Herndon would be overcrowded.
Do you not understand numbers?
My preference would be for all kids to go to the closest school. But, it's just not workable. Even with major redrawing of boundaries, it will still be not workable.

The relief is needed at the Western schools of Chantilly and Centreville. Not Langley.

This would almost be worth it just to see the outrage from parents living outside of Great Falls once they realize their kids’ high school soccer field is also the septic field …. it would be a whole new level of hatred for Great Falls.

So sorry to disappoint - any new school won't be going in Great Falls. So it looks like you'll have to direct your irrational hatred elsewhere.

Obviously, when referring to “further west” within FCPS, we’re talking about Chantilly, Herndon, etc.

And let us know when they actually break ground in this mythical high school that many of us have heard about for 20+ years.

It’s not so obvious. Much of Great Falls is west of Chantilly, as much as they might act otherwise.

I believe the intent is to start construction in the latter half of the decade, so the people who quake at the thought of being reassigned to a more diverse school will have several more years to call it mythical and work behind the scenes to kill it. But if the county asks taxpayers to start funding the land and building costs, and then diverts the money elsewhere, it’s fraud and the county officials involved face potential criminal liability.

You sure about that? Here's a map for you to consult:

As you can see, Reston, Herndon, Chantilly, Centerville, etc. are ALL west of Great Falls. This is where any new high school would be built.

I think you need to take a map reading class.

Once more, the schools that need relief are Chantilly and Centreville. Chantilly has an enrollment of about 1000 more than Langley according to last year's membership data. But, you want to take kids from Langley? Just because they are wealthy? Why?

+100
Because they are obsessed with making Langley kids pay, in some form, for their unhappiness. I have no idea why, as Langley's boundaries don't adversely affect anyone else. But these people are irrational, so...

No one is pretending anything of the sort. Of course part of Great Falls is closer to Herndon. No one said it wasn't. But why would we send kids to a school that is overcrowded (Herndon) from a school that is not? Because that's what YOU want? Too bad.

You both seem confused. As it's been pointed out several times already, including with visual aids for your convenience, I won't bother to make the point yet again that the entire Sully district is further west than Dranesville, where Great Falls is located.

Yep. It's hard for them to hear facts, but one day maybe it will sink in. This hypothetical high school has nothing to do with Langley. Don't know why they keep bringing it up, ad nauseum.

The reason Langley was ever part of the new western school discussion was due to overcrowding at McLean. The thought process was that the McLean overflow would move to Langley. This in turn would overwhelm Langley and necessitate moving some Langley kids to Herndon.

Population increases due to developments in Tysons and around metro is expected to further burden schools in that area including McLean. The thought of a new Western HS scares the panties off some GF families zoned for Langley because it could create extra capacity at Herndon, especially if the school is built on the proposed Hutchison site. Meaning that the fate of those GF kids closer to Herndon and others on the western edge of the Langley pyramid could land up in Herndon. (The horror!)

If McLean HS doesn’t become overcrowded (again??), then GF families on the edge are “safe” from having to switch schools. They will want to prevent high density housing in the McLean and Langley pyramids that would push them out of Langley and into Herndon.

Even without the mythical Western HS, the western edge of the Langley pyramid COULD be impacted.

Won’t the growth in Tyson’s impact mostly Marshall?

Yes, if all those criteria line up and the stars align just so, the very western edge of the Langley pyramid COULD be impacted. But no one is "scared" of this remote possibility. It certainly does seem some of you want to believe we're all just quaking in our seats! If it happens, decades from now, then so be it. Right now, it's not even on the radar. Because - once again - that mythical high school has yet to be built.

Pump the breaks, Elaine. That was an explanation of how Langley / GF gets dragged into the mythical high school discussion.

Not Elaine, but I think you need to give this a rest. If you think Tyson's needs a new high school, then present data and start lobbying. I thought they already redistricted some of McLean to Langley--and I have not heard anything about Langley now being over capacity.

Which of these schools are over capacity?

Marshall
Falls Church
Langley

Seems to me that's where the overflow should go.
