The city council needs to give the PCSB the authority to do more or redefine their role.

But to say that right now -- under the current rules -- they need to do "more oversight" isn't fair. Their hands are tied to a great degree.

Maybe legally, but i think they could be more proactive in a practical sense. And they admitted in the hearing that they basically whiffed it on WMSTHS by not researching the actual value of the builiding.

Right.

Can I be on this board? Who's on the board anyway? Are they all just hand-picked by the Mayor....

If only there was some way to figure this out. Oh well, we will never know.

Thank you, was just making fun of the PP who couldn't be bothered to use google. The PCSB may not be perfect, but they do a pretty good job with making a ton of useful information easily available on their website.

Informatiom is not worth much if nobody does anything about the problems.

So much easier to just ask this board though. That's one thing they're great for!

CMI reaching 8th grade this year should help the finances, e.g., the specials teachers for upper elementary and middle only taught up to 7th grade last year but will teach up to 8th grade this year. Additionally, this year begins the graduation of grades with only 2 classes and the grades with 3 classes will soon begin reaching upper elementary and then middle which should also help financially.

If I’m not mistaken, ITS has the same model and just getting to some middle grades with two classes per grade. I don’t recal if their financials were ever as dire. They also pay their teachers significantly more. I’m at a loss figuring out CMI.

ITS has a greater total number of students yet fewer SN students than CMI which inherently makes CMI's model more expensive due to the additional aides, inclusion specialists, therapists, etc. That's why I think CMI finally reaching 8th grade this year, having 3 classes in a grade instead of 2, hiring full-time therapists instead of outsourcing, etc. is all going to help CMI financially in the long-run.

I believe ITS was the same size 3-4 years ago when they first expanded to middle as CMI Zoe today. Again, they pay their staff nearly double so that would account for your extra aides you’re referring to (though not sure that’s accurate). CMI is woefully mismanaged. There is no getting around it. For those that attempt to explain it away or talk about “how CMI is such a great fit for THEIR kid” so like GOP making up excuses for this mess of an administration.

OMG you guys.

Their bios say NOTHING about having an actual child in a charter school. WHAT.

One bio indicates the man has two children. Again, it does not say whether they are students in a charter school.

Clearly this is somehow a total afterthought for the Mayor?

I don't think all of these members were not appointed by the current mayor.

And why would they have to be charter school parents? But I do know that at least one of the members of the PCSB is a charter parent.

I dont think you have to have a kid in a charter school to be appointed. Honestly, they need board members with financial and real estate managment backgrounds to manage the mess of schools like CMI. I think parents get blinded by ther other stuff (floor time, diversity!, the location) and forget that bills have to be paid sooner or later.

I have many CMI friends and they all say the love the school but worry about middle school. no one has mentioned staff turnover, low salaries or the budget crisis looming at the school when the can't make a balloon payment and defualt.

And most students in DC charters are in one of the big charter chains -- KIPP, DC Prep-- which serve thousands of students. They are much bigger operations and you need someone with different expertise than a parent brings to oversee them.

I have several and all love it in preschool and start to get worried about halfway through kindergarten. I think the staffing changes this year have stressed them out.

The SSMA parents I know are much more worried.
