I wasn’t sending my kid even if they had school.
When I was in middle school in the are years ago, a 4 pm ice storm sneaked up on everyone at noon. I was in lunch when hoards of kids started piling in and an announcement was made for everyone who was buying lunch to report to the cafeteria to eat. Kids ate on floors and the lunch ladies didn’t have enough food cooked, so most just got PB&J sandwiches. But in order to dismiss us, they had to feed everyone. Freezing rain started a bit after 12 and our dismissal was at 2pm. Back then school ended at 3:45 for MS. I stood in the bus line until nearly 3 when some teachers ushered us back in. We were all coated in ice. The busses couldn’t reach us and kept wrecking. We were taken to the office and got to call our parents. This was also before cell phones. Some parents came but many others couldn’t get to the school. The storm was over by 5 and the temps started rising, but we were still stuck until after 7 pm. I remember that each bus that arrived had a snowplow escort to throw salt/sand. It still took 90 mins on a trip that normally took 15. I was 13 and it was terrifying being on the bus with no seatbelts and feeling the back end slip and sway. Can you imagine that happening now?? Parents in this area would lose their sh:t! My parents weren’t even upset because “these unexpected things happen.” But now we all carry a phone that gives constant weather alerts, so when ice is predicted (and mine is showing it will now begin at noon), closing is the smartest move. |
FCPS is such a disaster. |

I’m shocked a lot of you are okay with losing instructional time because of the threat of rain or maybe freezing rain.
Maybe you guys should demand more for the county. Demand they change how they treat and take care of winter weather. So many school districts in the United States can handle a little winter weather. Why can’t NOVA? |
YES! And if some families decide to keep their kids home b/c of the risks, fine - do what feels right to you. But school's shouldn't all be closed b/c some kids have icy walks, etc. Instructional time lost is huge at this point. And in terms of child safety, many families are now faced with another day leaving their kids home alone, possibly not in a warm home, with parents' commutes home tonight unpredictable... |
Plus THIS is today’s forecast from NOAA: “Snow, freezing rain, and sleet likely between 10am and 4pm, then freezing rain and sleet. High near 31. South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.” Little or no accumulation. |
Last I check NoVa public schools still outperformed rest of country? |
Half an inch of sleet (aka ice) is quite a bit. |
| FCPS is ridiculous but OP is a genius to foresee this coming!! |
Lol on tests? Because that’s the only thing that matters? You’re complacent and don’t care to be better because we outperform most of the country? I want better for my kids than to cancel school on the chance it freezing rains at 3pm. |
| Sleet =/= total icing. |
| Why aren’t we expecting better? The weather is snowy every winter. Why aren’t we asking why it cannot be taken care of without having to cancel school? |
This x 1000000. |
