What's the REAL difference between an Ivy and any other decent private university

How obsessed people who didn't go to one of these schools are with them.

I know, from stalking LinkedIn resumes, a large number of cs grads from ivies go straight to google/Facebook. I remember hearing in the early 2000s, a graduating cs class would all get offers without interviews.

Fast forward a few years, I did some cool things, and I find myself in Silicon Valley working on cutting-edge tech. Stanford is just across the street. When I first got here, I still didn't understand why kids were silly enough to pay to go to one of these fancy schools. Now I do. When a kid gets into Stanford or Harvard, they are plugged into a network of power that they will have for the rest of their lives. Getting a job will always be easier. Starting your dream company with millions in the bank on day one becomes possible. Moving up the chain at the local monoliths becomes a heck of a lot easier when you can rub shoulders with the higher ups at local Ivy League networking events.

Ivies and Stanford offer unbeaten need-based aid. You'd be surprised at how little many pay. Might be less than a state school, depending on income bracket.

Referring to cost to get in, mostly. Better k-12 schools, test prep, summer programs, all the activities, etc.

Said someone who didn't go to an ivy........but perhaps their child did

Hahahaha. Right, everyone who went to an Ivy has never gone on a job interview and not gotten the job. Is that really what you think? It's not a magic wand! Bippity, boppity boo. I went to Harvard so I'll twirl around three times and then my boss will give me a raise. That's hysterical!

My daughter goes to an Ivy and I am overwhelmed by the ioppprtunities she has been offered. She has received internships paid by the college to work on the Hill, a paid research position which involved work in Japan, one on one mentoring, invitations to numerous worships, retreats and conferences where she has dinner with notable people in her field Etc. I could go on and on. My son goes to UVA and his experience has been quite good but not as personal and the funding for out of the classroom activities seems to be more limited. On the other hand he has learned to find opportunities funded by other sources. Neither is applying for jobs or graduate school yet so we will see how that goes and if the Ivy helps.
