Boosterthon Runs at MCPS schools?

I'm going to stand in silent protest, every night for a week, in front of the home of the PTA person leading the Boosterthon program. They must feel shame.

I explained to my DC why I didn't like boosterthon, and this was one of the reasons. It's a have vs. have not situation, and very publicly demonstrated. It's awful.

We told our DD that anyone that leaves during the "character lessons" doesn't really care about the school or being a good person. And we really believe it.

? Any parent who supports boosterthon clearly doesn't care about kids if they think 1. using kids to fundraise is ok 2. taking the kids out of instruction time for several days for this crap is ok 3. and that this kind of fundraising that clearly shows the haves vs have nots is a good lesson in character building for ES kids in a given school.

If anybody knows of any coordinated "anti-Boosterthon" effort involving more than one school, I'd love to know about it.

Well they don't coordinate efforts, but there's an anti-Boosterthon facebook page, if that helps. Google: Boosterthon scam

Of course you did. You are an administrator who loves sitting on this board all day writing crap. No one hates children more than 850 Hungerford. Except the Board of Education.
They hate children more than administrators.

Why can't a school just host their own fun run. The Boosterthon scammers make parents do most of the work anyway. Why not just do it on your own and I don't know, keep 100% of the proceeds.

Our school raised $25,000 and the parents gave the principal an earful. But the PTA and teachers decided to try it and we managed to get chrome books for all the 4th and 5th grade classes. Same percentage as wrapping paper and that only ever made us $3000.

So you teach your children that the end justifies the means???

You made more because it was deceptive, and it was at the expense of the kids. Congratulations.

PP - way to not see the forest for the trees. Go back and sell some wrapping paper. The school with 50 new Chromebooks will be laughing.

This is the excuse you use. As a PP stated, ends justify the means. You are chopping down the trees to give the forest a better appearance, though the forest didn't need thinning.

My kid's school does have chromebooks, but IMO, they don't really need them. It's not critical. If I had to choose between boosterthon and not having chromebooks, I choose not.

I also hate the wrapping paper sale. I'd rather just give straight out donation.

Exactly. I rather purchase the wrapping paper which specifically says 50% of the proceeds will go back to the school - and you get wrapping paper which you normally have to buy anyway.

Boosterthon NEVER EVER says: Donate money to the school and we as a company will pocket 48-60% of it for showing up a few days and then the rest goes to your school. It is a deception that 80-90% of the parents and families do not know about. The kids do not know about. Extended families who the kids plead for money 100% do not know about it.

Send home a Boosterthon flyer that says 50% of the proceeds go back to the school and 50% go to Boosterthon. See how that goes over....

The schools DO send home flyers about the wrapping paper and specifically state and write out that 50% goes back to the school. Is Boosterthon that transparent?
