I doubt that even half of American Jews know what Avoda means, much less what Avoda Zara means.
Eh, to Chazal. I am not sure there is any term you could have used for any form of polytheism that would not have been derogatory to chazal. Personally I don't mind if my neighbors worship the stars, as long as they do not try to blow me up or stab me.
It explains why MY usage of the term was not derogatory.
I think I specifically said that Jewish notions on this are diverse. Thanks for the info though, now I can drink wine made by Hindus Christianity is also not Avoda Zara, per Rabbi Dorff, and of course Islam has clearly not been Avoda Zara since Maimonides, at least. Nonetheless when engaging in Sufi practices, I think it is still halachically incumbent on observant Jews to have a kavanah that is not Muslim.
http://www.millenniumpeacesummit.org/Hindu-Jewish_Summit_Information.pdf You also need to refresh on the outdated and no longer supported theory of the Aryans being some sort of invading group. That has long been debunked. You can do yoga and call it "Torah Yoga"-http://www.torahyoga.com/page1-what-how-content.htm or "Kosher Yoga"-http://kosheryoga.net and try so very hard to convince yourself that you have completely cut yourself off from "idolatrous" roots, but the TRUTH is within either way. Good luck with that ring of fire you believe in.

Oh please, we aren't going to start on that. It has only been debunked by Hindu nationalists. The accepted position among scholars of linguistics, etc is that IE speakers came from outside India.
I am okay just calling it yoga.
You don't seem to get it - I don't care about the roots - Judaism has "roots" in Canaanite paganism. We all have roots elsewhere. It is what we do with the practices, and how we apply them, that matters. |

Yoga is glorified stretching.
The poster who said it was dangerous in the wrong hands because of the power of un;washing energy or whatever is delusional. |

No sorry, you're actually just ignorant about yoga is. Like...you are PAINFULLY fucking ignorant about yoga is. |
I know right? I was like, "FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS MY PAIN." |
| This thread is seriously strange, considering that physical yoga originated in Egypt. |
Yeah so weird seeing how there is evidence of yoga in the Harappan and Indus Valley Civilization which are a couple thousand years older than the Egyptian civilization. There has been evidence of yoga in Eygpt, not that predates yoga in India, but it was certainly a part of the culture there as a spiritual/religious and medicinal practice (not simply physical, no one needed to exercise back then, lol). That's because there has always historically been a great deal of cultural exchanges between the two areas, inclusive of Yemen and Oman. |
Denial is a powerful thing. Though not as powerful as the truth. |
Oh God, I'm in so much pain!! It's coming form my ignorance of yoga. Will a few downward dogs help, ya think? |
Hell yeah it is. That is evident from all the 101 excuses on this thread about how yoga is not Hindu so they can sleep better at night and give themselves a pat on the back after they perfect their 'physical stretching position'. TRUTH. |
