Embarassing Things You Do To Save Money

I use plastic grocery bags to line small trash cans.
If I am thinking ahead, I will take an empty water bottle when I am traveling, fill it at a water fountain in the airport, and then I don't have to buy water.

Thanks for the airline tip! I always complain that it's complaint crap that we can't carry water through security thereby forcing you to by high-cost water inside the terminals. I'm so dense for not thinking about this. I can usually get away with bringing filled sippy cups/water bottles for the kids, but they are starting to get too old that I'm not sure how much longer that will work. We have the flat, fillable water bottles that are perfect for this! thanks again!

Hair Cuttery. So embarrassing when someone see you there! And then says they never go there, either.

Many people think airport water is gross. I hate paying for water, but I agree that airport water usually tastes worse. I don't care so much about the taste, but I'm afraid it may not be as clean.

I am amazed that people think Hair Cuttery is embarrassing. I bet the same people think Walmart and K-Mart are embarrassing. To me they are great places that offer great value for the money.

Thrift stores are more embarrassing. There are other haircut places that are much cheaper and more embarrassing. There are some haircut places that are for teaching or training and they cost about 70% less. These cuts can take more time and there is a higher chance of a screw up of course.

Someone back me up and show some love for Hair Cuttery.

Hang in there PP. Your kids need you. Sign up for every available assistance program. Also check out Freecycle, you may be able to get things you need at no cost.

I disagree with this advice. Here is my version:
Hang in there PP. Your kids need you. Keep applying for work and once you find something, work hard to keep it and advance. Why are Americans obsessed with having the government or other people help them? What happened to hard work and self-reliance?

I use to spend a fortune on haircuts. Now I get my whole families done for the same price as mine alone used to cost. If people want to look down on us, that is their problem not mine. HHI low 200's. Love Walmart too though the one in Germantown is run poorly so rarely go there.

Because Govt taxes them (middle class). If the govt took over a third of my salary for years at that income, I'd want help too.

In my mind, this poster is the very person these assistance programs are designed to help. She probably paid into it plenty when she was employed and is now someone needing the assistance. I don't think anyone is advocating that pp become a welfare queen - just get the help her family needs so desperately right now. There is no shame in that.

it is true that our current system is designed to help this person. but maybe the system would be better like this: get taxed less, so you can save more, and you can save yourself when you need to.

That will not change the fact that some people somewhere some time will need assistance.
And less taxation does not mean a higher salary, so it does not mean more savings

You are completely wrong! Less taxation means more take home pay. With the extra money, you can save more. The problem is that irresponsible people won't save it. They'll just eat more and get fatter.

that works well for high income people. For low income people a percentage of a small amount is not that much

Hang in there, hope things get better for you soon
