There are lots of Asian ppl in College Park. |
Very funny whoever is said Asian minorities like to stick together and sorry I’m not going to college park to make friends. I made many attempts to make friends with the supposed liberal white moms in Hyattsville, my point is they are struck up as anyone else. It’s not this inclusive Oasis of ppl they claim to be.

Sorry but if you shop at that Shoppers you're from a different demographic than the people we are talking about. That's like saying you were at The Murray's in Brookland! And if you want scary people day drinking just go to DC.
I wish people would stop acting as if DC is all Georgetown and PG is all whatever neighborhoods over here where poor people live. Blacksburg? I go early don't know because we never go there, just like the DC people in ME never go to their sketchy neighborhoods. |

Too many sport bikes on the road.
This isn't why I wouldn't live in PG. But I so hate driving there in nice weather because you honest to goodness cannot go 5 minutes on a road in PG without some knuckleheads on sport bikes dangerously weaving in and around traffic and revving up their engines. Darwinism will take care of some of these idiots but I dread driving in PGC. |

Menomale and its new shop (That is Brookland...there is a big ol sign welcoming you to Brookland right before you get to it
Is that the sign at the corner where the girl about to leave for college was shot in broad daylight by kids who live in the giant apartment complex a stone's throw from Menomale? Nobody who lives in real Brookland considers that Brookland. That is Edgewood. Google what Edgewood is and its history. Everyone I know who bought there in faux Brookland has had to deal with smart ass kids sitting on the other residents' cars parked in their driveways. And you know why Menomale had such a hard time getting a liquor license? Because there were already so many liquor stores all over that scummy area. Oh and because the AA meeting spot on RIA and 10th didn't want their members to have to see yet another place serving alcohol in the afternoon. |

Sorry but the dirt bikes are a DC thing, not PGC. "Butler, who also worked on the 2014 ballot initiative that legalized recreational marijuana in D.C., said ATVs and dirt bikes have long been a part of the city’s culture — “bike life,” it’s called — just as they are in cities like Baltimore, Atlanta and Cleveland — where rides are filmed and widely shared on social media."

Nope - dirt bikes and ATV's and different than sport bikes - go and look it up. Though there is certainly some overlap geographically across the DC/PG line. |
| Lack of diversity, government corruption, horrible schools, and victim culture. |

Hi,
I haven’t read all the responses... I used to live in MOCo. I had a couple good friends who lived in PG and would visit them often. There is shopping there- and I often drove there to go to specific stores like Ikea and Aldi. Some shopping centers are run down, others are fine. I have driven there to go out to dinner- hyattesvill has a nice town center area with great places to eat. There are some great playgrounds and the outdoor pools are less expensive than the ones in DC. Because I had friends in the area, I bought a monthly pass to the pool, so we could meet up with the kids. For my family to swim all month, was what we would pay for 2 visits at a MoCo pool. (DC residents get free pools, but the facilities are not as nice/fun. The pool we went to had several slides and an obstacle course etc). Watkins regional park is super cool - and we’ve been to a nice open gym session at the sports complex. The schools choices I would probably have to go on the reputation / I don’t have personal experience. One friend had a child there for K, but moved out of state afterward. The K experience was good. Other friend has her kids in private. There is a lot of new development going on to improve walk and bike ability. It is certainly more affordable to buy a home, but my understanding is that taxes are higher. (I’ve been told, don’t know anything for certain.) |
| Racism and classism, mostly. |
Lack of diversity? Victim culture? Have you actually visited the county? It is interesting reading some of the comments about PG. These same people raving about how trendy U St and other areas in DC EOTP and how great they are compared to PG wouldn't have stepped foot in those places 5 or 10 years ago. One thing I hate about this area is the snobbishness if you don't live in a certain zip code. Well enjoy paying $800k for your overpriced condo in DC that was once the "hood". I will keep my little house in College Park and enjoying having access to the amenities of the city without paying out the you know what for it. |
| It’s nowhere near my job in Northern VA. Probably not the answer OP was looking for. |
|
I can tell people who say stuff like "crime" or "safety" have never been to PG County. PG county is a large county with many different types of people and environments.
The county has it's hood elements and it's very nice areas (and not just the parts where white people are). While the schools need work, there are some areas where you can avoid private until middle school. Home values won't increase but so much due to the limited demographic of potential buyers. |
| We are empty nesters who live in Alexandria. We have lots of friends in Alexandria and nearby NoVa, so won't move, but if we were coming to the region for the first time, I would like pick somewhere in the Mount Rainier-Hyattsville-CollegePark corridor instead. I love Alexandria, but in terms of house for the money relative to commute, I think NW PG is probably a better deal. |
