What item could you “afford” but don’t buy?

I think this is a good point. I've always purchased used cars, but I bought my last one new and 9 years later I've had zero problems. I won't go back to buying used.

I’m 51 and have never bought a new car but I would like to have that experience once. We can afford and would pay cash but I see the prices and I always back down.

However I have also had an amazing run of luck with used cars and not run into maintenance issues. The one time DH bought a new car, it was a lemon and a disaster. I also hate dealing with dealerships, especially their service and repair shops.

FWIW, I’m the PP and when I bought that new car nine years ago, it was such a fun experience getting a brand new one — since I’d never done that before — that nine years later I still get into my car and feel like I have a new car.

I never understood this craze either. But my prescription sunglasses are pricey and I can’t do anything about that.

Once you try Maui Jims (including prescriptions) you won't go back to anything else. They are such high quality lenses and last forever (but I don't typically break mine or loose them, I'm used to having prescriptions so any sunglasses are too valuable to "loose")

It's lose, you know.

I find people like you very annoying and unlikable. And I have a graduate degree in English.

I don't really care. This is such a moronic misspelling. How do people spell the word that means the opposite of tight? Lose?

Of course you don’t. You think going around being exceedingly nasty to people is fine, but misspelling a word is not. You should try to get over yourself, but you won’t. You should also learn which words you shouldn’t be using anymore (“moronic” is one) given how offensive they are. Whether you spell them correctly or not. But you won’t.

Second home
Designer goods
Plastic surgery
New cars

I blow a ton on my primary home, though, as well as jewelry, travel, food, and household help.

We’ve had several used and several new cars. There wasn’t any real difference.

Ding, ding! The only correct answer.

Just had a coupon for free guac on the app... no way I'd get it otherwise.

Looking at getting a new car soon, and this is definitely on my mind.

Definitely spend less on cars than I could "afford." But I usually only keep cars 10 years or so, and when they start giving me trouble I replace. I've had great luck with online purchases of cars in the 2-4 year old range.

I fly to India often to spend time with my elderly parents. I will absolutely pay for business class out of pocket...because I just can't do the solo travel for 20 hours of flight time any more.

DoorDash/UberEats - unless there is truly nothing in the house and it's impossible for an adult to leave the house to pickup takeout.

Agree. I bought a used truck with 14k miles on it. I was never able to get the farts out of the seats.

Literally out spite we have two very old cars. F that. Plenty of money for two brand new nice cars. Nope! Years ago we leased a car and were shocked to get a yearly tax bill on a leased car. Im still bitter. Never again.
