How do you reconcile this: Dems blocked the bills because they want ICE reforms and MAGA said no dice, masked men in our communities are fine because it’s all about the criminals. Dems then propose funding for TSA and FEMA seven times, and MAGA blocks it. In response, ICE is sent to help TSA. Not the National Guard, ICE. But what about the criminals we’ve heard about ad nauseam? MAGA is still stalling, so something’s up.

ICE agents can also check IDs before they get to checkpoints.

Apparently, CNN needs to play the game of pretending that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) do not already operate in U.S. airports.

Airports are border checkpoints, and the "customs" part of both ICE and CBP are functions that happen as part of regular duty for CBP and ICE officials.

As Tom Homan notes, CBP/ICE already exist in airports and can assist Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials in various duties including, customs checks, routine security, entrance/exit security as well as baggage and pre-boarding security checkpoints that do not involve the use of x-ray and scanning machines.  In fact, more than half the functioning work of TSA agents can easily be handled/supported by ICE/CBP agents.

But CNN needs to build a narrative, so the reality of simple explanations works against their interests.

Are you paying any attention at all? The issue is the behavior of ice agents. not FEMA, not the Coast guard, not TSA

ICE is getting paid. TSA is not getting paid. Coast Guard is working without pay. FEMA is not getting paid and there is flooding in Hawaii.

Those are important functions.

It makes no sense to not fund Homeland Security over ICE when ICE is already funded.

One aspect of the DHS shutdown that has flown under the radar:

Yes, ICE's frontline deportation officers are funded via OBBB, but their civilian support staff/non-law enforcement personnel are not. They haven't been paid since the DHS shutdown began.

They may not be the ones physically removing illegal immigrants, but they are crucial support for the ICE officers who are.

I've been contacted by several of these employees who feel they've been left behind. They won't quit or call out because they believe in the mission, but it is getting increasingly difficult for them after missing several paychecks already.
