And wait until this year when the impact of US gov't job losses drive even more students to apply.... |

2025 admissions snapshot:
MD (MCPS) magnet student 1590 SAT, 14 AP+ classes, 4.9/5.0 WGPA (top 5% at worst), great reccs, good essays/ECs MechE major on applications Reach: MIT - deferred EA / rejected RD NW - waitlist RD Duke - denied RD Target: GT - deferred EA / accepted RD CMU - denied RD Michigan - waitlisted EA Safety: UMD - accepted EA Honors + $20K VT - waitlisted EA / accepted RD (LOL) Purdue - accepted EA Pitt - accepted EA $80K |
Public high school. Applied ED to Cornell. 4.9 UW/1550 SAT (800 M)/Mostly 5s on ~12 APs/took MVC in HS. Other kids in his HS were rejected at UMD for Eng but accepted at VT for Eng. |
Georgia Tech is an absolutely outstanding result for a kid applying to engineering. So are Maryland and Purdue. Clearly a bright kid. |
Agree. Bet they would have gotten into NW or Duke if ED-ed there but UMd or GT is a better result for the money. No need to spend all that money on NU or Duke, given those other options. Congrats! |
| Would love to see some snapshots from kids who aren’t tippy top applicants…. |

Our kid has below average GPA and EC's; But SAT is very high. Admits so far:
Penn State, Oregon State and Texas A&M - electrical engineering. All safeties. Like all others on this post - he has applied to VT ( dream school in-state), UMD, Purdue, GT, Wisconsin, UIUC, Minnesota and the UC's. Really, folks need to apply beyond these 7-8 schools. The chances of admit are so much higher, and education/opportunities are almost as good. |
EXACTLY how we felt given that IB/consulting are not targets for DD - she's been exposed through parent's experiences |

My DS last cycle
Deferred then admitted Notre Dame Deferred then admitted Northwestern Deferred then admitted Georgia Tech. Currently finishing his first semester at Georgia Tech Engineering. Deferred does not mean rejected. So, don't lose hope. |
Awesome! |
Can you share stats for your child? Did he or she apply to any of them in the ED round? |
Regular Decision at Northwestern and neither Notre Dame or GT have ED. Non-binding REA at Notre Dame and EA2 (OOS) for Georgia Tech. |

Target:
Northwestern: Applied broadly to McCormick; didn't specify which engineering discipline Illinois: MechE /1st choice major Safeties: Illinois: Econ + CS (not a direct admit to Grainger but can apply to engineering as a sophomore) Alabama : Didn't specify a major (applied as NMSF); accepted today Will apply to hard reaches (Princeton & Stanford), reach (Michigan) and maybe another safety (?) if he doesn't get in NU ED. |
