“First Gen” is the best hook you can have right now.

And she was a first gen, URM from a high FARMS school. This is the golden ticket trifecta for an Ivy admit.

She’s not first gen.

+2 not first gen. PP didn’t even read the article. Her parents immigrated here and attended college. They met while the dad was tutoring the mom in math.

It's sad that before clicking the link I already knew it was another URM bags 5+ IVY stories that you see every admissions cycle. It's great for the student, but the framing is always super cringe and makes it read like X student is a 160+ IQ brilliant student when in reality if you switched the races in these circumstances the outcomes would have been completely different

Because there are test required schools.
It's very relevant.

You seem to assume it’s the job of these universities to collect the highest achievers. I disagree. That’s too much of what they do already. Their job should be to make and mold them, not collect them.

It actually is the job of these schools to collect the highest achievers, and that's certainly what they've done in accepting this young woman. She is a rock star.

Test required means just that: test scores required. It does not mean: we only accept students above a certain score. That 1370 indicates that she is perfectly capable of doing well in her studies at Yale and everywhere else she applied. And all her other accomplishments indicate she will thrive there and be a big contributor to her college community.

Colleges have done the research. Standardized test scores are predictive of how well a student will do. You may not like this conclusion but the pandemic was a real case study.

Correct. And 1370 puts her at the 96th percentile of SAT takers. As I said, it indicates that she is perfectly capable of doing well in her studies.

These people are insane -- 1370 is a very capable score. Did you know that SAT tracks pretty closely to IQ? So you are talking about a person who likely has a 130s IQ. She doesn't need "easy majors"!

I'd love to know what all these people got themselves, that makes it so easy to say that 1370 is bad.

I happen to have a lot of exposure to SAT and ability. I myself got a 1470 with no prep class and did pretty poorly in college bc I never learned how to study, but I'm fairly accomplished in adult life. My husband got a 1500s score and works in middle management consulting. I also was an SAT and GRE teacher for many years and I know that many intelligent people get 1200 or 1300 scores before prepping. Another long term boyfriend was the first in his family to go to college and sat down and got a 1350 with no prep (or guidance of any kind) and now he's owns his own law firm and is super accomplished. If he had been UMC, he would have had a mid 1400s score after prep.

There are about 80K college applicants every year with "130s IQ" . That's not what interests 5 Ivy League schools with their <10K seats.

1370 SAT does not equal IQ of 130 … possibly ~ 105 or so …
You can only measure IQ up to 2 SD properly - to the extent that IQ assessment is dubious…. and 130 + IQ person would belong in T10

You are really the ignorant person. An IQ of 122 is the 93rd percentile rank. Maybe instead of having a personal SAT coach she was spending her time making the world a better place.

Very few people want Ivy colleges to be filled with the absolute highest scorers on a test that is now just over 2 hours. That is NOT what makes you successful in life. College life in America is not like college life in other countries where there are exams and colleges take the highest scorers. If you want that system go to schools like CalTech or a school outside of the US.

So many people post here and say their kid is being discriminated against because they have higher scores and have leadership EC’s and they didn’t get into the college they wanted while other lower scoring students did. Then they post the leadership skills are things like honor club President, section leader of orchestra, captain of golf team (that probably has around 8 players), created a clearly bogus non-profit, etc.

This girl stands out. Her EC’s tell a phenomenal story. The fact that she can have millions of TikTok views is impressive.

But all the haters see is she’s black so they post she must not be qualified, she is going to need remedial classes, she is going to major in African studies. The subtle (and not so subtle) racism is so disconcerting.

This is clearly a dei discrimination situation hopefully the doj looks into it and reprimands the schools quite sad for those that struggle especially those that are not part of the correct and I say correcting quotes democratic demographics

How do we know this girl did not have an SAT coach?

People keep mentioning this.
Is it written in the press somewhere?

The video made me tear up. Hope she goes on to do amazing things.

Silly post. 1530+? Where did that arbitrary threshold come from?

No one cares about your SAT after you're accepted to college: it's a high school metric. No - employers don't care either.

Whites ( and some Asians, mostly men) are going to hate regardless. Her validation doesn't come from them.

She'll be a Yale graduate. One of the schools DCUM constantly obsesses over.

Good for her!

You know that test scores weren’t required at all of these schools this year, right? And that test scores don’t tell the full story if someone’s capabilities, right?

She seems very impressive, poised and is clearly a leader. She will likely go very far in life and these schools would love to have her as a future alum.

Are you complaining as much about legacy and donor admissions? Or how it’s easier to get in if you are male? Those are other sides of admission preferences. This young woman looks to be wonderfully qualified and I wish her the best wherever she goes.

+1000

Sad to see all the jealousy and resentment on this thread! She has so much self-initiative, drive and intelligence it's not surprising she's a standout candidate.

Also people should be reporting their 1350-1400 SAT scores more (as well as 31/32 on ACT). People are hiding high scores for no reason. If you're over the 90th or 95th percentile, go ahead and report!

Generally true

Only an abject fool would think a 100 to 200 point difference on a middle school SAT exam determines a remarkable student or employee!

I normally agree that people shouldn't comment on private people, but when you put info publicly on TikTok and give an interview to the press, I think others have the right to comment on your merits. I know someone who was admitted this year to Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia/Juilliard and they didn't publicly post anything or talk to press. Hence no discussions on message boards dissecting their college admissions.
