NIH in limbo

Back in thr day when I worked for a start-up biotech, I had a colleague who had been trained and had worked in a Communist country. He was really good at jerry-rigging instruments to make them work. I wonder if we're headed in that direction.

That's ridiculous.

All NIH study sections (i.e. review panels) suspended until further notice. So no grant proposals will be reviewed. I guess the EO pausing all communications was worded in a way that caught this in its net? Not a good look for biomedical science.

You won't believe the amount of quid pro quo involved in grant proposal review. About time this were looked at.

Have you been on one? Have you reviewed proposals for NIH? I have been on 30 such and have seen nothing like it. Don't believe propaganda or gripes from people who have an axe to grind.

Are you still funding grants for gain-of-function research in Chinese labs?

Yes. That PP is ridiculous. These are highly respected researchers who give up their time to sit on these review panels and try to parcel out very limited funds among very deserving proposals.

That PP has posted earlier and sounds like a disgruntled that they couldn’t get funded.

I am not the PP but NIH has a lot of wastage for institutes that have crazy overheads. All this needs to cut down and make federal research $s more efficient.

It does have bloat. Suspending grant reviews is not “good for the states” tho.

No they don’t. Why don’t you name them all and explain where the waste is? I’m sure the troll farm has a list you can block and copy for us.
