Why not rec? Try rec league from clubs, not pure rec. It's not just about the form, or the idea of how to play, which you might get from private coach and clinic. Kid needs to play with other kids to improve in games. Rec is the best way for newbies to implement and practice what they learn, not to mention a lot of recs are run by club coaches, give the coaches a chance to know your kid before tryout is also good.

We had a great experience with the MVSA rec league until my DD aged out. That was by far the best ran and most competitive league. Unfortunately, it happens once a year and it is over before you blink twice. I am not aware of any club offering leagues throughout the year. You do have rec options, but you plateau after less than one year because there is no "next level".
