Expats

I thought the episode/show was about "mothers".
-Becoming a mom
-Losing your identity to being a mom
-Dealing with your own mom
-Not wanting to be a mom

I can't connect with the characters enough to identify to them as a mom or woman, at all. I liked the show at first but the thriller aspect of "where is Gus?" would be more interesting to explore than all these rotten humans.

I agree. I don't like any of the characters. I had hopes for Mercy earlier when she lost Gus and wanting to find out more about her back story, but now she is just annoying.

I'm not sure I'll watch the couple remaining episodes. I'll just come to this thread instead.

I think expats live with a lot of help and yes, probably treat people like crap. I've never had help of any kind personally, so cannot relate.

Interestingly the cases you hear about are much more rarely yt or mixed families.

Hilary is insufferable. What’s the point of her character?

screwed up Mom & Dad
screwed up neighbor friend Margaret
screwed up husband

actually not so screwed up herself, considering.

+1
She seems to have a level head on her shoulders, considering what we now know about her upbringing. And she’s been a good friend to Margaret.

Yeah, stuck in an elevator with a mean older women who can't stop chiding and insulting her own adult daughter.
Then plays the victim when the adult daughter discloses the real underlying issue of the mom's toxic game. OOOOOh, we're not allowed to talk about that...
Meanwhile, blond lady drops she's late for something important, needs to see her husband, is used to playing referee - and no one let's her talk.

DP. Interesting that they never explored the very first episode where the blond lady is glaring at David from her apartment door and he says she is always doing that. I wonder what that was about.

What?

Are you serious? Hong Kong was British until 1997, and English the only official language until 1978, and after that one of the two. So that people expect most folk to speak English isn’t off the mark. How do you not know that?!

DP. Could you possibly be more unpleasant? Pretty sure we’re all well aware of the UK history in Hong Kong. 🙄🙄 Doesn’t change the fact that the VAST majority of people there only speak Cantonese. How do YOU not know that?!

Not to mention, Margaret and her husband were on the mainland at the morgue when they were screaming at everyone to speak English.

This isn’t true. Cantonese is the predominant first language by far, but most Hong Kongers speak English as well, many at a native or near native level.

Sure, but again - it was when they were on the mainland demanding everyone speak English.

+2. Hillary and Clarke are my favorite characters, and the “help.” Everybody else is trash

I dont remember this, but you reminded me of something else - in the first episode Hilary said something to David about Margaret, something like "What she did to you wasnt nice but...". So what did Margaret do to David? Why does this blonde lady hate david? (I mean, why wouldn't you)?

PP here. I get the impression from what Hilary has said that Margaret smeared David to the police after Gus disappeared, making it seem possible he was suspicious. I wish they would have delved further into that because it’s left a lot of unknowns. Maybe the blonde lady heard what Margaret said about David and so was suspicious of him… but I’m confused about the timeline. The glaring from her apartment door might have been even before Gus was taken.
