This is a wonderful explanation of how I, and many GENX'ers feel. (Standing applause). |
they also did not hit the workforce with the a concept of "work/life balance", "hybrid", "wfh". Many did not have much maternity leave, or "mother's room", either. These are all relatively new concepts that the younger generation now expects in the workforce. I think these are great things, btw, but previous generations didn't have these "luxuries" in the workplace. -gen xer who now wfh. |
Another Gen X-er here-I totally agree!! On another note, I'm an RN and while my millennial and Gen Z cohorts are admittedly faster than I am with learning new technologies a lot of them are addicted to their phones. I know I sound like an old lady haha but TikTok should be saved for lunch/break times. |
+1 . Another RN here. Many of my coworkers can’t take their eyes off their phone (not talking about patient care time). But when a coworker or Dr comes in to talk, they don’t even lift their eyes. An older coworker does it too. I’m not old fashioned, but seriously phones during work time (especially as a nurse) should only be used for emergency. Tons of instagram, TikTok viewing going on. |
That's so depressing. And then they complain about having to work. This is what I think about when hiring, and then realize that I'd rather just do it all myself than put up with this nonsense. |
Gen X, Milenials, gen z are lazy and want to retire young can’t even do succession planning. I sat down with my 45 year old staff (wet behind the years man/child) I asked long term plans. He babbled about maybe getting PhD and teaching one day and maybe passing CPA test and starting his own accounting practice and his work be down to early retirement. I throw a bucket of cold water on him and said I don’t get how you got time for that when you are here full time the next 22 years. Retirement age is 67 and I want you to take my job in 5-6 years. I am one from CEO then do my job 7-10 years and maybe can make run at CEO by 58-62. Then retire 67. His jaw was down and confused and the little man child says my kids are 14 and 12 I want to partially retire in 6-7 years. And just teach or do some side consulting. At work the 57-65 crowd needs people under 40 now to replace then. I will be replaced by gen z when I retire in 2030 for good. No point even mentoring anyone over 35. |
How can you possibly be in line for a CEO job when your communication skills are so poor? Based on your timeline above, you are GenX…so how is GenX so lazy? You do realize the average age of all CEOs in the US is 53…so I guess not all GenX are lazy. Also, you don’t think the greatest generation said the same or worse about boomers? |
And this the first generation to be able to job hop without consequence. 401ks give you a lot more freedom. |
Even at peak, very few people had pensions. And the pensions were cheaper to operate, because life expectancy was so much shorter. |
You won't own a home either.
|
| They are soft and feel entitled. It's the beginning of the fall of Rome, lol. |
That was the fallacy. Life expectancy was very predictable but corporations pushed off the inevitable and foreseeable… Actuaries always knew what was going to happen but leadership put their head in the sand. |
You guys literally burned the Gen X generation. You guys worked an easy pace without emails and messaging - 9-5, SAH spouse, cheap college, etc. that way you can last long in the marathon that is a career. Sky high student debt, 60 hour work weeks or more, increase of work pace and density/productivity and dual income households (now required) fell onto the shoulders of younger Gen X and Millennials. They’re burned out by 55. Don’t you see what you caused? |
