The PP wrote, “ I don't think I want my child to have a teacher who doesn't see the value in professional development”. Don’t we all value PD that is worthwhile? I wasn’t saying we should be exempt from it, but I understand the frustration that comes from breaking up a week of school to attend PD that is indeed, not valuable. |
“Promised”. A few years ago it was “promised” that the two week winter break would be here to stay and yet there is an option to shorten it. Things change. As far as snow days, 180 days vs fewer days, etc. What happened to 180 days or 990 hours? If we have so many excess hours, why not shave off a few days? They aren’t going to shorten the school day. |
Post your address so we can send your trophy. |
I am a teacher and find most PD unnecessary. I’d much rather have one day for report cards and any extra time to work in my room. Everything FCPS makes us do is to check the box and make us look like we are forward thinking and equitable. |
+1 Yes, please for the 4th quarter! |
My last PD was sitting in a room and typing on a shared document with lots of other people so we could reflect and look over other’s reflections. This went on for a very long time. It was not based on anything practical that we could use in the classroom to help students, more like topics SOLs philosophy major found useful. At the end we were told this document wouldn’t be used for anything but was nice for them to have on file. I’ve never had a PD that was more of a waste of time. At least have us reflect on classroom management or teaching strategies and actually discuss them in groups. |
*SOL is a typo |
I don’t know. I just know school board said recently that our Calendar will better align with other counties. |
PP here. I don’t disagree with you. I just think that is why we’re here doing it this way. The green schedule, despite the hot mess of the last week is actually not horrible. I hate starting in the middle of august when a week before Labor Day weekend is fine. I like how the end of the first quarter aligns with Election Day and Veterans Day so if you have littles taking that week off is ok for Florida. Let’s be clear: that week is amazing for Disney. Very low crowds and cheap. As for snow days: agree 100%. But also- that last hot mess of a week: who is really going to keep their kids in school for that when we could just go on vacation? And the camp orgs here are all probably looking at the calendar mess and going why?!?!?’ |
DP, if you saw the PD offered, you would t feel that way. |
But a different poster said that she doesn’t want her child to have a teacher who’s not interested in PD. Being a good teacher or not, it’s not linked to wanting to attend invaluable PD.. |
Right. I am a very open-minded and flexible person and I am constantly learning and adapting, but most of the PD is such a waste of time. I’m all for continuing my education, but ENOUGH with this PD. |
Someone on another thread mentioned this, but why isn’t there a calendar for all of NoVA or even the DC region. Other countries have school calendars that cover an entire state. |
LOL I was thinking this. deep breaths PP it will be ok ![]() |
Ugh we have six....virtual VA is starting to look good ![]() |
