How did you pick between MD and VA?

We picked MD because one of us worked in MD and there is better public transportation to get to DC.

They do not enforce/prosecute property crimes so if you are ok with that mentality of both very liberal educational and judicial system you will really not notice a difference other than lower taxes in VA.

Once you go farther west in VA or north in MD it becomes more purple/red for both.

True. But, I am South Asian and for me South and MidWest carries the risk of being killed by racists.

Over dramatic? Maryland is also the south btw. No deep south but under the mason dixon line

Glad you are happy

We moved here last year and it looks like our jobs are staying local remote, so that takes our commute concerns off the table. We’re primarily looking to buy in Montgomery County because that’s where we’ve been renting, but we’ve never lived in an area with so many jurisdictions so we’re not sure what to look for.

For some people there is no difference. For others it is night and day. We visited both a lot. My view after that was that Maryland was crap. Everywhere. While VA was crap lots of places there were places that were not. Everything about Maryland was awful. I don't even like to drive through there. But here is the thing, lots of people from Maryland have the exact same view of VA. It is really the feel you get.

At least in Maryland driving makes sense

Sure, go from red light to red light as an excuse for traffic calming. Moved to va and would never move back to Md.

? very odd to make life decisions based on someone you met at a dog park.

If I had to stay in the general DMV but didn't have to worry about commute, I would look at Western Loudoun, VA, Shepherdstown, WV, or Brunswick(ish), MD. Obviously, I'm not worried about taxes, but would like a smaller town lifestyle.

Stalkers need a social life, too!

MD for the privates. Bailing on public schools and want Marylands better privates. Plus it’s prettier and better planned. NOVa to hardscrabble.

We chose Arlington for the public schools, the metro/proximity to DC, the politics, and the far superior state college system. It worked out extremely well.

We found the neighborhoods within 45 minute commute of downtown DC quite similar. Needed bigger space than we had in DC proper. Offer on Arlington house rejected on Monday, offer on Bethesda house accepted the next day! We had friends in both locations. It's been five years, clear that either location could have worked just fine. VA has Pentagon, CIA, and better state supported higher ed. MD has NIH, a bit older neighborhoods, and already strong but still rising UMD. Public education in both locations is changing the same directions as magnet programs and similar are modified to enhance equity.
