Oberlin is also excellent in this area, but it’s for a certain type of fine arts not preppy kid. You have to visit to know if your kid would click there. Mine did, I’d attending and loves it.

Agree with Case. Our first round of visits for a STEM kid, fine arts ECs was Wooster, Oberlin, Kenyon, Case.

Denison and Miami of Ohio are also possibilities.

Pitt is another great school in that general geographic area. It’s very good in pre-med and has a 7 year MD program that’s very competitive. Kids from the DMV who visit often like it much more than they think they will. It’s Rolling Decision.

Because they are drivable, I’d look at some combo of these to start.

Thank you SO MUCH! I had heard of Oberlin but none of the others. I will def check them out...

I would not count on U of Rochester as a safety but very much worth a look. Many of the student we met on our visit were pre med or interested in other health sciences and it sits directly across the street from the hospital and med school. Campus is impressive.

Juniata is also a good safety, with a strong track record for STEM majors/pre-health kids.

A number of these are off. Wash U in target?

I'd suggest focusing on what schools fit first, and then making sure you have options that are safeties.

Rochester isn't a safety and not sure about W&M, Case Western either. Not sure which Boston that is.

Maybe by Rochester they mean RIT?

Thank you to everyone, you are wonderful to take time and help us with new ideas and feed-back! We have now a list of diverse places to visit and we will collect more info on some of the ones mentioned that were not on our radar - just to check if a good fit.

Since people have now put Jefferson and Temple on your list, I'll just recommend a couple-day trip to Philadelphia. These are both good ideas. Throw in the University of the Sciences and St. Joe's in the city, and Villanova in the suburbs, and your child should have a much better idea of whether they want urban/suburban, large/small. It's a good city to knock off a few tours in.
Your child would be a strong student at most of these schools, so should get some merit aid.

Have you visited Georgetown? They have scholarships for first gen college kids.

My child had an excellent experience as a pre-med at the University of Rochester. She was accepted to several medical schools and just started at her top choice a few weeks ago. The kids are really nice there are there are a ton of opportunities for pre-med students (and others!), but the size is not overwhelming. It's not a safety for anyone, though. Some others she considered when she was going through the process 5/6 years ago (I know things have changed some):
Wash U -- this was her absolute top choice, amazing campus, great medical school, tons of premed students, perfect size...didn't get in tho.
Case Western
Rice
Georgetown
Emory
Vandy
Miami of Ohio
UVA
W & M
Villanova
Loyola MD
U of Richmond
Pitt
Tufts
VCU
University of Miami
St. Louis University
Creighton University

Thanks, I will check this out! My DC is the first to attend college in the US, not a first gen college kid.

Super helpful, thanks, this is exactly what we were thinking. A few days in Pennsylvania and a few in NY, lots of great schools to see...

Thank you SO MUCH and congratulations to your DD for acceptance at her top medical school! How proud you must be!! We will check all the great schools in this list. And thank you for the feed-back on Rochester, good to know the kids are nice (reviews on JHU and other schools are scary!) and the size is manageable with opp for pre-meds.
