Anyone anxious about sending under 12 kids to school because of Delta?

You need to stay off Facebook! Breakthrough cases are rare, and hospitalizations and serious medical issues from breakthrough cases are extremely rare. The data does not lie. Being nervous about unvaccinated isn't unreasonable. But reading an idiot on FB telling you about a breakthrough horror story and letting that get to you is, IMHO, silly.

Yes, I am nervous.

OP, I sent my unvaccinated DC kids back to school last week. I, too, was worried. So far, it’s gotten easier every day. And I’m pretty sure that as more days pass, my anxiety will continue to lessen.

They are SO SO happy to be back. Live teachers! Friends! Community! It is worth it.

Here are some (featured in NYT Wirecutter) that are about $0.90 each: https://bonafidemasks.com/Powecom-kn-95/

Aren’t those adult size?

We will test family members periodically (DC’s test yourself program is great for this) to do our part. I can only hope for the best. There is not much point in sitting around and stressing about it. I’ll pay attention to the news snd the Covid numbers snd make the best choices I can.

Testing yourself periodically with no symptoms makes the DC positivity rate seem lower than it is.

Wow that is a painfully stupid comment. I guess that DCPS shouldn't do any asymptomatic surveillance testing then, right?

There are no "horror" stories about breakthrough cases. What is the agenda for all this anxiety?
Do we really want kids to stay home? I don't.

They definitely should. But those tests should not be counted in our test positivity rate.

Breakthrough cases are not rare, much less extremely rare. Neither are they horror stories.

I'm sorry, but...you aren't great at this. Certain people in the community shouldn't be 'counted' as having coronovirus, if they test positive for coronavirus, because that would...uh...change the community rate.

Also, you are proposing that only people with symptoms test.....which ignores all of the asymptomatic cases.

This doesn't mean she shouldn't test. It means, as it always has, that positivity rate shouldn't be something we use to calculate risk.

Correct. Students who test positive with a salava test at school will be required to get a PCR test. THAT test will count for the positivity rate.

See, so I really had to get it through my skull that DCUM is very much not representative of the majority of parents in DC. I think the fact that only half of kids 12-15 in DC are vaccinated puts it into perspective. There are about half of parents so not worried about covid that they aren't getting their kids vaccinated. Then there is the Greek tragedy chorus on DCUM (which isn't even the majority of postings). I had to realize that the people that gleefully predict children's deaths are....well, at least they are a minority.

So if you care about your kids getting COVID, it’s appropriate to be nervous.
