Is this an argument about getting a minivan vs getting a different car or an argument about getting a minivan vs sticking with the vehicles you already have?
In the second situation, I would absolutely oppose the extra expense but in the first case, the difference is probably not huge if you're looking at SUVs or similar vehicles and if he's the one driving it, then ... why not? I have 3 kids and moved to a minivan from a sedan when the youngest was a few months old and I have to say even with the oldest now able to ride in the front seat, I enjoy having a vehicle that can haul stuff (not just people). |
And if your DH wants to get a minivan as YOUR main car, then he's a douche and you should divorce him. |
| As a tall person it is absolutely miserable to ride in most sedans for any length of time. My elementary kids don't even have leg room in my expensive sedan and I have a large onefet an SUV or mini can or drive 2 cars. |
| He wants a different ride. He wants to be The Father with a better car than others. More kids + more kids' stuff = seen as a better, more involved Father. |

Would one of the adults be willing to sit in the back between two 14 year olds (and then two 15 year olds and then two 16 year olds) and let one of the teens sit up front for the "only 30 minute drive?"
I wouldn't. Happy driver of a minivan and 2 teens, now 15 and 18. Not to mention on road trips, each teen takes a row and spreads out and we still have plenty of room to bring everything we want/need. |
Never have had a mini van. Have plenty of time in the back seat with 2 kids/adults in various situations. I guess tolerance depends on what you’re used to. |
| If he wants one he can get one and drive it. That's what I told my husband when we wanted one. I have one kid. I don't want to be responsible for hauling a van full of kids around. Let their parents drive them. I got a fun vehicle instead. |
Then get a big SUV. |
| Remind him the 14yo will be going off to college in 4 short years. |
| We bought a minivan a couple of years ago and have never really needed it. If I could do it again, I wouldn't bother with it. |
| Those 14 year old boys aren’t going to get any smaller… |
| We have one kid and had a Pilot with a 3rd for a while but mainly because we have 2 dogs and wanted the Cargo space. I would not buy a minivan. I would also not habitually drive 3 kids in a carpool if I had a regular car. I would only carpool with one other person/kid. |
| Any man who actually requests a minivan is not really a man |
