Anyone who has English ivy in their yard is a jerk

Holly is native.

This isn't the UK. English ivy isn't native here. We have native vines.

Yes but… that’s in the UK… no one ever claimed English ivy is bad in the UK…

Wow, please tell me you aren't that obtuse to site findings of English Ivy on the European continent....as if it has any relevance to N. America where it isn't a native plant that destroys our trees and homes and is a perfect plant for harboring pests here.

I get finding it to be a nuisance, but your rage is a little outsized. Is a neighbor's ivy growing on your structure or something? Did it kill a tree that fell or something? You can't control everything, and if you want to, consider moving to a lot with acreage.

Nope.. Your ignorance is outsized..

Tiger mosquitoes tend to remain at ground level, especially under ground covers such as English Ivy.

Thanks to people like you, who grow non-native and invasive species of plants, we have problems with other pests like the Asian tiger mosquito that are absolutely horrific beasts that chew you up to death. Horrible.

It kills trees, invades your neighbors' properties, invites in rodents, and is a boon for horrible Asian tiger mosquitoes. Get rid of your damn ivy please. Why isn't it illegal already to have ivy in your yard? Horrible. And people who have it are terrible.

It came with the house, OP. I don’t like it either, and manage to beat it back little by little each year. Since you feel so strongly about it, why don’t you swing by and help sometime?

Again. I get your anger sort of, but you are making a lot of assumptions. 1. that I planted it, 2. that I do nothing about it, 3. that I own my house, etc... CHILL OUT.

Wow, and here I thought I was just an overwhelmed homeowner with a problem in my yard. Turns out I'm a jerk and a horrible person and people can't stand me. Who knew?

I think swimming pools in standard lots should be illegal due to the nuisance noise they inevitably result in. Trampolines too, really anything that subjects neighbors to hours of ear piercing shrieking, should all be illegal too.

But I also recognize that's it not all about me.

Yet DCUM hates Roundup.

I don't know what kind of ivy or climbing vine my neighbor has, but I do know that it has jumped onto my property and is suffocating my bricks and roof. I pull down the vines I can reach every few days when they creep toward my dryer vent. The worst of it is rooted in a gated part of my neighbor's yard I can't access. My neighbor is wholly disinterested in controlling the growth. Aesthetics and vermin aside, fixing roof problems and repairing vine-damaged bricks will be REALLY EXPENSIVE.

False equivalence, but nice try. A pool or trampoline doesn't grow into your neighbor's yard and constantly kill their plants, trees, or ruin their structures. Trampolines don't harbor mosquitoes like ivy. Ivy is invasive, aggressive, and ruinous.

We don’t have any, but I love it! My neighbor has some and I love that it’s creeping into my yard.

After many years of effort I think I have eradicated 99% of the English Ivy in our yard. It will pop up periodically and I pull it up by hand, as well as along the property line where it creeps in from the neighbors yard (along with their poison ivy). We have some other non natives in our yard and we will work on some of those next. Living in Bethesda can be exhausting - now I feel guilty for having nandina because the red berries can kill birds.
