Good meal stops on Boston-to-DC road trip

Rein's Deli (Hartford) - great sandwiches

Sally's Pizza (New Haven) - order as early as possible for to go; 6 hours early isn't abnormal, totally worth it (Pepe's is good if you miss the Sally's window)

Merritt Canteen (Bridgeport) - only in a crunch, but fast and easy

NY/NJ is awful for this; try to plan accordingly, but if you need to stop, the Club Diner in Bellmawr (Turnpike Exit 3) isn't bad; I've only ordered to go on the way and eaten in the car

Woody's Crab House (North East, MD) - decent stop if you really just need a break

Supemercado Campos (Aberdeen) - great hole in the wall Salvdoran

G&M Crabcakes (Linthicum) - Great for getting home fed; we often order uncooked and air fry

I don't do this drive and don't care at all, but this is some top notch work. The Salvadoran place shows PP has a broad palate and good taste.

+1!

I also just learned about Harold's Deli in Edison, NJ, just off the turnpike. Don't be dissuaded by the sketchy exterior and abandoned hotels - it was really good!

Shady Glen in Manchester, CT. It's a few extra minutes off I-84 but worth a stop. Straight out of the 1950s. Great burgers and fantastic homemade ice cream/shakes.

The one at Mohegan Sun is typically a lot less crowded.

The newer Pepe's locations all greatly pale in comparison to the original in New Haven.

Yes on this. It’s is still great but the original is the best. Make the trip!

For Sally's, I would call at 11 am sharp regardless of when you want it. Figure out your arrival time, and tell them you would like it then. They either still have availability for that time or not. It is curbside pickup, 2 minutes off the drive, and absolutely amazing. They are huge, but you should over order. The plain cheese is a crowd pleaser but the white tomato is the best.
