I’ll just point to the words of Chief Contee after several juveniles were arrested in connection with a spree of at least a dozen robberies last week, and he said those kids were known to MPD, and police had dealt with them before, and asked why are the police still dealing with the same people they have arrested before? The juvenile system under Karl Racine is known for being catch and release, and that doesn’t seem to be working out so well right now.

100%. I think that’s where some of this has gone off the rails from a law enforcement perspective. Right now it doesn’t seem that there is any difference in how violent and/or repeat juvenile offenders are handled, because everything is being looked at through the lens of how to best help the offender, as opposed to balancing public safety with that consideration. I know that many of these juveniles are in need of intensive services and help, but at the same time when they are shooting people and holding them up at gunpoint they also need to be removed from the community in the interim.

I agree. This was the logic behind three strikes. I find it hard to disagree with it, but we can't have sensible things anymore.

I want them to blockade major streets at night that have become racetracks for motorcycle gangs. They could do it between 12 and 5 am or something and law abiding citizens can slow down and then pass through. Either that or I want speed bumps on my Ave. which isn't happening.

Right now it doesn’t seem that there is any difference in how violent and/or repeat juvenile offenders are handled, because everything is being looked at through the lens of how to best help the offender, as opposed to balancing public safety with that consideration. I know that many of these juveniles are in need of intensive services and help, but at the same time when they are shooting people and holding them up at gunpoint they also need to be removed from the community in the interim.

Their parents should be part of the solution. Involved in overseeing their activities, going to counseling with them, getting drug treatment themselves, etc. oh, and paying for it all and making restitution to their victims.

I agree. This was the logic behind three strikes. I find it hard to disagree with it, but we can't have sensible things anymore.

Three strikes should apply to minor crimes like shoplifting, never serious, violent crime.
