| Is it really an option? |
| I was super nervous when I had mine out in college and did IV anesthesia. However, I had never had braces or even a cavity filled. You can also ask the dentist to prescribe a few tablets of Valium or Xanax and let her try one ahead of time to get a sense of how it feels and decide if that would be a good relief tool. As an adult many many years later, I realize that I really just needed anxiety management and meds to physically relax. |
Yes absolutely. The oral surgeon said we could do any of the three options. Like I said I only had nitrous oxide when I had mine out. And my 17 year old brother drove me there and back! |
Please. Just because these “options” are all technically feasible —four impactions are no joke and you are being cheap and cruel to not do IV. If the kid doesn’t want it-they are naive and it would be kinder to explain the benefit and follow the ortho-surgeon’s suggestion of IV. |
Who said the oral surgeon suggested IV anesthesia? He said either option was fine and that he did many extractions just with nitrous oxide. He said it was our choice. |
|
Also -- I should say that it's just some of her molars that are impacted -- two of them.
I assume the oral surgeon would have said if there were a need for her to have IV sedation? He just said some people don't like the sound of the drill and all the tools. When I had mine out I remember seeing the pliers come out and thinking that was the funniest thing in the world. Certainly was not traumatic for me. I listened to music and zoned out for a while. But I am concerned about a bad reaction to the nitrous oxide. I didn't realize that was a thing. |
So much this. |

My 14 yr old DS is due to have this in a few weeks. He is opting to be knocked out for the duration.
When I was 14 I had all 4 impacted wisdoms out, with only the numbing shots in the mouth. It was pretty horrific. |
| I’d just tell her she’s getting the IV. I think you’d need other pain medication other than nitrous. I was in so much pain after mine and luckily the IV helps a bit after. I was high as a kite too and making snow angels on the ground. |
+1 if you do this with no pain meds your son will never trust you again or visit a dentist. Pretty traumatic. Also a one time thing that will block him from dentistry forever. |
| My son had his out last summer at 16. All four were impacted. IV all the way. However, it’s not a deep sedation. It’s a very light sedation that they come out of pretty quickly. |
| I had impacted molars and just did local anesthesia. I don't know why they put people under. It's not necessary . |
|
If they start and the nitrous + local doesn't cut it, they can always start an IV.
That's what they had to do with me a couple years back. For some reason, they couldn't get me fully numb and the pain was excruciating. I felt horridly nauseous after, but it was better than the pain. |
| I had nitrous and the local with all four impacted -- it was fine. I thought it was weirdly fascinating -- I liked being awake and blood doesn't bother me. If your child has never had IV anesthesia before I would have them start with nitrous and see how they do. |
+1. On nitrous I thought the sound of them cracking my teeth was HILARIOUS. |
