To the mother of the 17mo old...
My son was given zyrtec from about 6mos old until about a week ago. he's now 22mos old and weighs enough to start claritin. He also started singular at about a 1yr old. We have only switched to claritin because the zyrtec wasn't working as well as the dr thinks it should be. We didn't have any allergic reactions or changes in behavior with either medications. He has horrible allergies that make it hard for him to breath and he has about 2-3 ear infections a month so we do all we can to keep him free from all allergens. We are going to start allergy testing soon. I hope this helps From http://www.pfizer.com/files/products/uspi_zyrtec.pdf Children 6 to 11 Years: The recommended initial dose of ZYRTEC in children aged 6 to 11 years is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily depending on symptom severity. 1) saline spray in the nose
2) washing baby daily, changing sheets daily, changing all clothes daily to get rid of pollen. 3) keeping A/C on and windows shut My doctor recommended this as well. Also changing their clothes when they get home if they spent a lot of time outdoors running around in the park. Zyrtec makes me drowsy so I use Allegra but DS uses Claritin b/c thats what the peds recommended. |
My son was large too -- around 33 pounds but maybe 18-20 months when we started claritin at the ped's recommendation. He said weight did matter somewhat. I would check with your doctor and get their opinion. |
| Allegra works the best for us -- DS gets 1 tsp at night and 1 in the morning. |
| What is the dose you give to your two year old of the Zyrtec |
|
are you even sure it's pollen allergies? has your DD or DS been tested by an allergist?
I'm just wondering because any babies get sick and cough all the time, and any baby would sleep hard thru the nite on benadryl |
Our 2 yr old gets 1tsp of Zyrtec at night.
Benadryl doesn't make my child tired at all. It's hard to get reliable allergy test results in toddlers - they are more reliable once they are 3 yrs old and up. |

Are you all talking about the children's version of these meds? Probably a dumb question, but just checking. My daughter started taking children's Zyrtec around 2.75 years. She's a little over three now. Seemed to work better on fall allergies than spring.
We do it in the AM because we were told that although it makes some drowsy, it makes some hyper (much like Benadryl). |
Yes, we use the children's version of Zyrtec (well, technically Costco's version of the children's Zyrtec). |
