Where in the District or Maryland would you take a homesick Texan for a birthday barbecue dinner?

Here is a link to an article in WaPo about some of the places that were open in 2020. Some of the places mentioned above are here. It may give you some more ideas, especially if you look at the comments. They’re in Riverdale, MD but recently opened a stall in Union Market.

+1 their wagu brisket is amaaaaazing. They have two places now: on in MD and one in DC. We've been to the one in MD a few times. It's a bit of a trek for us so we don't go that ofte, just on special occasions.

It depends on what they are missing. If it is brisket, then Smoking Kow. They have the best fatty brisket around unless you make your own.

OP here -- Thanks, all, for your suggestions. We're either going to do 2fiftybbq or Federalist Pig (the latter might win out since our guest of honor loathed the Federalist Society in law school :0).

In my learned opinion, they will never ever be satisfied with a restaurant experience in the DMV, but a roadside BBQ on the way to the beach organized by the local Kiwanis or whatever will be declared the best BBQ ever had outside of Texas blah blah blah. Better to import the sauce and have the Texan make the BBQ themselves and order stellar desserts.

Yes! We tried it recently and really liked it. OK, I'm not from Texas nor do I really know anything about barbecue, but to my untrained taste buds it was delicious

ZZQ Texas Craft BBQ is great. Delicious and fun setting! It has an outdoor patio with seating in the back.

What nonsense: https://www.eater.com/2015/7/2/8864653/franklin-barbecue-sauce-recipe-meat-burgers-ribs. Have you been to Texas?

I am a Texan. Grew up in San Antonio and Austin. Family is in Fort Worth. Trust me. Take them to Texas Two Fifty in Riverdale. It is the only good barbecue I have had here, and I have gone to probably EVERY barbecue place in the region (excepting some further out Virginia spots).
