DH and I were discussing this last night. People admire strength and gravitate to it-- even when they don't necessarily agree with the policy-- so I really expect Obama to gain from this, especially among moderates/independents/those without a strong opposition to this bill. And, I think by making the battle so tough, the Republicans have ensured that Obama gains even more political capital from this victory.

This was a total game changer.

As an independent who supported Obama, I was really disappointed in him. I was beginning to believe he had no backbone or leadership abilities and I had been bamboozeled (don't think that is the correct spelling btw). Anyway, I am back on board. Therefore, I agree with your DH. He showed strength. I like that in a man. Oh, and a president.

Hurray! (But the opinion above was mine, not DH's. I like to think that I'm the one who's more politically astute!)

Here's more proof that you are right!

I agree. The republicans are playing hard to their far right conservative base, the ones who come out in buses for non-national elections. They aren't going for moderates or independents, so the congressman who yells babykiller or the people spitting on African American congressman get points in their game. These tactices don't win the middle and certainly do not convert Dems but they energize the base. Democrats would have had huge problems bringing out their base if they had lost with an overwhelming majority. They still run a good risk of losing a number of seats if they can't get people out.

On one level, the devisiveness and rage from the Republicans is just a political strategy and theater. On another level it is incredibly destructive to the country and the long term life of the party. I get why the republicans chose to go down the beat Obama and stop anything on health rather than using their minority power to gain compromise solutions but it sucks. They sold out their own moderate supporters and the only ground pulled back from the farther liberal left was done by moderate and conservative democrats.

I miss the real liberal and moderate Republicans! Social and progressive good balanced with fiscal restraint is a powerful combination but its gone with the exception for some dems that look more like the liberal Republicans of the past. The latest Republican threat that they will vote against any bill on any subject the Dems bring forward out of retaliation should be a crime IMO. It plays well with their base that comes out to vote but is a horrible disservice to the rest of the country.
