Packed Lunches for Hungry Teen Boy

Anonymous
We do a lot of pasta for my tween boy in a big thermos. He likes it with red sauce, pesto or simply plain with olive oil and parmesan.

Buy a Rotisserie chicken and boil some rice.

Have him take chicken and rice in a Tupperware container and bring it home.

Also hard boiled eggs, cheese sticks, nuts (if that’s allowed), more protein and filling things.

Why? What's wrong with mom/dad packing the lunch?

Many spouses pack up for each other, why not the kids?

Because he is sick of what she is packing and it isn’t enough. He will know better what he wants and how much food to pack himself. It is also part of learn independence

Exactly! This is not OPs problem. OP probably does his laundry and cleans his room too.

I noticed that the guys in my office who were active tended to pack a “normal” lunch and then supplemented with grilled or roasted chicken strips and string cheese. U

Every day?

Yes if he needs a packed lunch. Luckily he's not a snack eater.

I wouldn't be packing a lunch for a 14 yr old. I haven't packed my son a lunch since 2nd grade. I take him to the store and pick out stuff so I know what to buy later.

My son would be embarrassed if I packed his lunch for him. My husband too for that matter!

My 14-year old son takes a sandwich with protein, full fat yogurt, fruit, and a piece of snack cake of some sort every day for lunch. That keeps him happy.

My son needed help to come up with ideas for large, filling lunches at that age.

He ended up heating up a can of hearty soup (usually lentil) and putting the whole contents into a LARGE thermos, not the little kid one from elem/middle school but a meal sized container. Also would have:

- crackers for the soup
- turkey sandwich, thick whole wheat bread, mayo, mustard, lettuce and tomatoes
- a dill pickle
- some babybel or string cheese or cheddar cheese slices
- fruit like an orange or apple or some grapes
- big container of whole milk
- something for dessert

(And after that, he had one nice, green leaf and he felt much better!)

extra snacks that are nutritious - like hummus, fruit, yogurt etc. I'm not a huge fan of protein bars but when my ds was in a spurt, we kept those in his backpack for those moments when he felt starving all of a sudden after school/sports

Why doesn’t he have ideas about this? This is why men act like babies when they get married. I packed my lunch starting at age 6, BTW.
