Private & Independent Schools
I know a family who this happened to and it turns out there was an oversight/a misplaced file situation. The school apologized profusely but was unable to offer a spot for the kids (twins). Well, the family applied the next year and the kids were accepted.
friends of mine were accepted last year but the letter was lost in the mail. I would call.
Loved the Landon admissions office! So helpful and well-organized.
Our acceptance letter to a top 3 school really did get lost in the mail. We found out our kid was in when another family called to welcome us to the school. Call it might be good news.
OP already stated that he/she made the call..it was NOT good news.
Sorry, OP! That really does add insult to injury. I hope it all works out for you.
For any admissions staff that may be reading this thread, please please try to be sure ALL letters get sent out. We applied to a school a couple years ago and didn't hear anything. Finally two weeks after responses had supposedly been sent out I called admissions to find out the status. DC had not been accepted and I then realized that I had spent two extra weeks wondering (and hoping) for some good news. It was kind of like a double rejection - no thanks and you all aren't worth my time to send the letter. Incredibly lame.
When GDS admissions failed to call us back for several days, we did not call back. Slack.
We were very put off by the GDS admissions process. Both times we visited the school - first for the prospective parent tour/interview with admissions and then for the playdate - they kept us waiting for an outrageous length of time. The parent who gave us the tour had about 2-3 sound bytes she repeated over and over, but she couldn't answer many of our questions. The admissions director was pretty rude when I asked what differentiated GDS from the other private schools in the area -- not only was she either unable or unwilling to give a substantive answer (I was impressed with all the schools I had seen and was genuinely interested in how they differed from one another in terms of teaching style, overall philosphy, etc), but she was practically disdainful of the question. Anyway, I can't say we would have turned down a spot at the school if we'd been offered one there and no place else, but that experience pt the school at the bottom of my list. Our child ended up waitlisted and we accepted a spot elsewhere.
Glad to know I am no the only one who had a problem with GDS admissions. They were terrible and actually left a silly message on my voice mail to the effect that if I didn't call to advise them I was withdrawing my application that I would "never be able to apply for their school again!". Oh geez! I swear it sounded like something a little kid would say.
7:56 -- We had exactly the same experience and decided not to apply.
|
You know you're at the bottom of the waitlist when ...
You call the AD and they can't remember your child. Happened to us. |
I am sorry that folks have had such troubles with GDS admissions. We had a fabulous experience: great parent, great interview, etc. And we do not work for the administration, just Jack and Jill off the street. We had less pleasant experiences with Maret and Sidwell, though not that bad in the grand scheme (when you consider the volume of apps, interviews, etc).
I feel so bad that happened to you! I am glad you called and I am sorry the news was not good.
