Tiny Survivor Stories

Best wishes for your friend and her babies! I know it's super tough.

We were in the nicu with our full-term son, and it amazed me how gigantic he was compared to his neighbors. But those little babies had the biggest personalities - letting the nurses know exactly what they wanted and how! We saw so many success stories on the wall by the main desk - it's truly amazing how good modern medicine is these days! I hope those little guys fight their way through!

Then she spent another few weeks in an incubator. Needless to say she did survive - she's 60 years old now, bikes and is generally healthier than most women her age except for a little asthma and allergies.

Do we have the same mom?! My mom was also born at 6 months (not exactly sure the weeks) in 1949 - she was also 2lbs. Never had any problems related to her being born so early! By the time she was 1 you would never have been able to tell that she started out so tiny.

How bizarre - my mum was born in CA - but she wasn't terribly healthy in her early elementary school years due to childhood illnesses and asthma (she got whooping cough and pneumonia at the same time and missed most of kindergarten.) Pictures of her, however, show a healthy, happy young girl, and she definitely had no problems past elementary school, and she ran cross-country in high school.

A family friend delivered triplets at 28 weeks. They weighed a little more than 1 pound each. They are now happy, healthy 8-year olds. Good luck and best wishes to your friend.

My nephew was born at 24 weeks with complications. He made it out of the NICU but struggled to thrive and develop for years. Now he is 8 years old and is super bright, active, and on target in everything. He does have some lung problems but nothing that isn't under control. It was a hard road but all his parents' hard work is paying dividends now.

Luckily my twins were born near term - but I work for many years in NICU and developmental peds (physical therapist) - many, many children that were preemies were 'delayed' in terms of milestones for the first 2 years but it is amazing how many, even those born at 26 weeks, did wonderful!

Also amazing how many children who were 'differently abled' were a joy to all around them.

Bst of luck to your friend.
