Have APS math inventory results been sent out?

Midyear MI came in both the mail and ParentVue.

What school? McKinley and no MI score yet.

Just checked ParentVue and math inventory results have been posted (Swanson). It looks like my kid's score actually went down from midyear, which seems really weird.

Is your kid scoring above grade level? If they are, there is a point they won’t grow if they haven’t been taught the math concepts yet. It’s possible that they actually performed the same but because it’s a few months later their scaled score is lower because it compares students to same age/grade peers at the same points in the year. As long as your child is meeting the grade level range (or ideally exceeding), that’s good.

Oh, thank you! This is the PP - that’s really good feedback. Yes, she’s above grade and was doing more advanced work but I know they didn’t get as far through the curriculum as they do in most years. I didn’t realize the inventories are scaled like that. Thanks again - definitely helpful and makes me feel better.

DP but thank you for that potential explanation. DC’s score also dropped from January which worried us. I was going to follow up with the school but this makes sense.

For our rising 6th grader, we got our recommendation for our kid to do Pre-algebra for 6th graders.

This combines 6/7/8 grade math into one year. We know it is a challenging curriculum for next year, but our DC has been tutored all year, and should be able to handle it. And math is her thing.

Math SOL 600, CoGat in mid-140s and Math Inventory @ 1046.

If math is her thing...why the need to tutor all year?

Ugh. I just checked and our DS bombed his tests. Still passed but way below his normal performance.

He was identified gifted in math / top cogat. Always 600 or close in SOL. And high MIs.

Final MI was lower than start of the year.

He has straight As and did well on unit tests. What happened?

I think the public school elementary curriculum is too slow, and there was no chance to accelerate if she never was exposed to advanced math concepts. Comes from a strong line of math oriented family and professionals. Plus calls for equity in math is concerning.

Covid. Your kid's scores is based on kids' scores from past years - kids who did not have learning loss and dumbed-down curriculum due to covid and distance learning.

Most kids who were placed in pre algebra didn’t have tutors, but I’m sure she’ll be fine.

Does not taking the SOL mean your kid won't get placed in pre-algebra? The other scores indicated a readiness for pre-algebra, but my son's recommendation was for regular Math 6. Identified GT in math, if it matters. He is bright and advanced, but not off the charts brilliant. We opted out of SOLs for a variety of reasons. Before I try to track down his teacher on summer break, I wanted to get perspectives from parents who have been through this already.

Since you are "In The Know", what percent of kids are heading towards pre-algebra math, and how do you know? Or just a troll?
